I just noticed this because I wanted to try out GMAbooster and tried to run a fps with wine.

I noticed that if I ran glxgears I got ~1000fps with the cpu at 800Mhz and ~1500fps with the cpu at 1.6GHz.

Then if I ran glxinfo | grep OpenGL I get

    OpenGL renderer string: Software Renderer

and I can't run any OpenGL games, they're slow as hell.

My take is that the gpu isn't being used to render graphics, the cpu is. Anyone noticed this?

I encoutered similarly things with Kubuntu. The windowmanager chrashes occasionally and re-starts w/o OpenGL support. Suudenly all desktops effects are disabled (transpaerncy, shadows, etc.) I had this effect after the first update after 9.10 beta but I haven't seen this issue now for 4 days. Hopefully it is solved...
