here's what I have that's still set to automatic..

    DCOM Server Process Launcher
    DHCP Client
    Event Log
    Plug and Play
Print Spooler (You can disable this if you don't plan to print anything. I actually have this disabled but I have a batch file to enable it whenever i need to print something)
    Remote Procedure Call
    Shell Hardware Detection
    Themes
    Windows Audio
Windows Installer (I guess if you won't be installing anything this, you can disable this too)
    Windows Management Instrumentation
    Wireless Zero Configuration
    Workstation

Seems to run fine with a config like this. Maybe one or two in that list can be disabled.

Disable everything you don't need. Depending on what you need, you have to keep the services you need running.

Disabling services doesn't really give you a lot of performance boost. Defragging and optimizing the hdd will give you much more performance improvements.

Get rid of Norton or MCafee anti virus and run the free Avast verson.
    Much less obrusive.

Put your OS and frequently used file on the edge of the disk and optimize the boot sequence. If you're not worried about getting virus, uninstall avast, it's such a resource hog. Even the much better norton corporate antivirus lags the AAO a bit. Avast decreased the performance about 25-50% on my AAO.

With everything optimized with stock xp, no services turned off...etc. XP boots in 15-20 seconds, everything loads instantly, nothing lags, and no viruses.

Also I do recommend checking up your start up entries (regularly).
