    Hello Good People,

I have a Dell 5502 laptop. I used to be able to select quiet mode in bios to minimise fan noise but, now, following a bios update I can't. I mean I can select it and apply the changes but the next time I go into bios I see it has reverted back to 'Optimised'. I am running Ubuntu but I wouldn't have thought it mattered what OS I am running right? Maybe it's just a bug but it doesn't look as if DELL allow my to roll back the update to test.

Any advice to shed light on this issue appreciated.

    Best

    Matt

Are you 100% sure that this BIOS update was for the exact motherboard model you have? Installing the wrong one can cause issues, some minor and some that can break a lot of things.

It might also be worth checking that the CMOS battery doesnt need changing. This is responsible for keeping the time on your system even when it is turned off, so if you need to reset the clock in BIOS after a power off this is a good sign you need a new battery. It is inlikely that the battery is the cause of this if the clock is fine though, but personally Id still check with a new battery.

The BIOS chip itself could not be working properly, it could be worth having someone look at it for you if you have tried the other two options and neither has worked for you. How old is the laptop?

It turned out to be a power saving daemon new to the Ubuntu 24.10 OS.
I uninstalled it and then was able to set the fan to quiet in the BIOS and have it stay that way.
Thanks for trying to help me.
