I have Ubuntu running on my AA1 with 8 GB SSD and 512 RAM
I just read these guidelines on the Arch Linux on AA1 site and this cite caught my attention:
At this moment I have a swap partition double the size of my RAM, so what's the best thing to do?

I don't think a swap partition will be a problem for the SSD, it isn't used much anyway and what is swapped out will likely stay there a while (at least it does in my case). However the SSD write speeds are very slow so if your AA1 needs more than say 200-300MB swap it will probably get really slow, so while it may be beneficial to have a bit of swap having twice the RAM is excessive.

512 MB ram here, not using swap, working fine so far.

I ran 512MB with no swap for a week or so while waiting for my 1G memory upgrade with no problems.

If you ever find that you do need a swap partition, you can use gparted (the ubuntu partition manager) to shrink your root partition and add one after the fact.

I'm running with a 2GiBswap, 120GiB hd, 1gb ram, and I've never actually seen the swap go above 0 of 2GiB mark. My ram usage rarely goes above 400 mb considering the minimal number of programs I run all the time (firefox, OOWriter, Evolution Mail, Pidgin, fire.fm ff addon constantly streaming). I truly doubt you'd run into any issues running without a swap partition. This isn't Windows where lack of a paging file will send you back 5 or 10 years...
(Not meant to disparage Windows, I use both interchangeably, it's just a simple truth)
