Suddenly skips wlan detection and will not rescan

AA1 worked fine and autodetected wifi networks in first 2 locations over 4 weeks. Now on boot it skips autodetect and goes straight to network manager. if i can get the ssid from some other source, i can usually connect. But going overseas where that may not be so easy. Does anyone have any idea why the scan/rescan function returns no results (not even an empty screen?
