Standard XFCE desktop - progress?

    Seeing as the FAQ thread is locked, just wanted to know if there's been any progress on getting the standard XFCE desktop working smoothly. If not, how about any other WMs, eg fluxbox or enlightenment, even gnome? Will trying to install these from the package manager break everything? I don't want to install xubuntu or similar because of battery life loss and long bootup times, boo!

    Buuuuump...sick of the Fisher-Price UI but need the battery life & bootup for uni use.

    this is by far the best way and does not break anything unlike the previous post.
    updates will work and full xfce desktop can be switched at anytime.

    By far the best customization

    so it's a fedora core8 box with xfce4 ...,
