Like the title says, I removed the SSD drive and put in a 5th gen 1.8" ipod drive 30 GB. Using XP right now and posting from it. I would say the speed increase is immense. I don't have any words to describe the difference. Everything is snappy and quick, I can have multiple windows opened. Absolutely NO freezing. It is amazing. Basically what I have done is I removed the ssd used the same ZIF ribbon on the Toshiba drive without the filter. I also removed some plastic SSD holders to make room for the 1.8" drive. I removed one of the screw holders for the SSD. The plastic can be carefully ripped out using pliers. HD videos aslo work perfectly now.

I used to use ubuntu so I will reinstall that and have it dual booting with xp. 20GB partition for xp and 10gb for ubuntu and I should be done with the apsire one. Overall I did notice XP is quite a bit faster then unbuntu in terms of graphics. I think the intel drivers have something to do with that.

What about battery time? What's the reduction? I presume hdd takes more power.

Thanks! It seems the drive is a lot faster when writing, but a bit slower when reading data compared to the SSD's.

I screwed up my original zif cable by trying to take the blue part off it so that it would fit in my new drive. Going to try and make a quick fix when I get back from badminton. I ordered cables as well, but they didn't come and I was eager to try the new drive out. But when taking the last bit of blue plastic off, the White came off too leaving bare wires. I'm going to try shortening it, then exposing the bare wires with a blade. If it doesn't work, no matter because it's useless now anyways. I'll add some pictures when it's all done.

Yes the reading is a bit slower but, there is absolutely no freezing which is something that pissed me off to no end. And the reading of small files with ssd is still slow. I will do a demo video to show the how it works with the HDD. The SSD even under ubuntu was slow as hell. Now XP is faster overall then ubuntu. I just couldn't stand the fact that windows would freeze no matter what every few seconds. Even with all the optimizations it was "usable" but it felt as if i had a computer from the early 90s... The HDD drive has a 20mb write and 20mb read.

Damn lol, I still might try, I've got nothing better to do lol.
Hopefully my cables (and CF to ZIF adapter) will come tomorrow.
On a side note, what make is your HDD? mines Toshiba. The cable seems to go in in a weird way, like sort of in the front, and the lock must indirectly lock it. Kind of hard to explain.
Tried stripping the cable and gave up. Too much effort when I can just wait till tomorrow...

    How so very funny
Made me smile. What absolute legends Basil Fawlty and indeed John Cleese are.
