I put Fedora 9 on my aspire one, and after some performance issues, I modify a few parameters in my box; I apologize for poor spell and grammar in my contribution, but you''ll guess that english is not my native language ;) => http://pagesperso-orange.fr/imarune/index_en.html

Re: SSD and SDHC speed up

If someone can try this on the regular Linpus distro and tell us if this work, it would be great !

Merci imarune pour ce tuto ;)

Some improvment in my mod : 21 Mo/s writing 38 Mo/s reading with SDHC devices (paragraph 6):
    http://pagesperso-orange.fr/imarune/index_en.html

As the SSD becomes almost read-only, the whole system can do 21 Mo/s writing and 36 Mo/s reading :D

Re: SSD and SDHC speed up

Why not replace the SSD with a IDE-44 pin adapter + 266x (40MB/s) or even 300x (45MB/s) CF?
Faster and perhaps cheaper, have built-in wear leveling as well

Well, you are probably right, but I didn't want to void my warranty (i made a memory extension after that, though)

16 Go 266x CF + adapter are much more expensive than 2 fast 8 Go SD (and i saw in a thread that writing speed is closer to 25 Mo/s for a 16 Go CF); 8 Go CF + adapter are also more expensive than 2 fast 4 Go SD.

Are you sure that CF have a good built-in wear leveling ? ;)

Re: SSD and SDHC speed up

SD cards also feature hardware wear leveling, using a filesystem for solid state doesn't help as we don't have access to the raw chips
Only cards that has raw layer exposed are xD and SmartMedia, but then you'll need a reader that lets you access the chip directly...

But like you said, it it not possible to evaluate the level of wear leveling done by the card itself

Right. But I didn't try a flash fs, but a LOG fs (cow): nilfs. Very impressing, indeed, but very prompt to crash: not mature at all; and I thing that brtfs (another LOG fs) is more unstable...

    I agree with you...
