Found a post that dealt with configuring sound with KDE4, but not Gnome.

I am trying to use Ekiga but do not seem to be able to use the built-in microphone. The best I get is very low volume playback using the configuration druid. That is with Pulseaudio disabled. Same for sound recorder - it does not seem to pick up the sound. Is there any specific configuration that seems to work with Gnome on the Aspire One?
