Dudes... (and dudettes) - I made an official mistake. I installed Fedora Core 9 on my Aspire One A150 (120GB), then I didn't want it anymore (due to some problems)... Fine, I deleted all the partitions (so that only the XP and the FAT32 recovery partition was left), but GRUB is still in the MBR of the disk. Okay I thought, and booted from an XP installation from my USB pen, and ran "fixboot + fixmbr". After that, I rebooted. What? GRUB again?! Tried another time, no luck. I even tried to run the Acer Recovery. GRUB is still there.
I searched the net, and found FreeDOS and made a bootable USB pen from it. I ran fdisk /mbr, but didn't help. Help?
(Yes, I know how to boot XP (and recovery) from GRUB, but I want to remove GRUB!)

    Any help appreciated. ;)

    1. Run WinXP installer.
    2. Go to recovery console.
    3. Go to system drive - mostly C:
    4. Type FIXBOOT C: hit Enter
    5. Type FIXMBR hit Enter
    6. Type BOOTCFG /REBUILD hit Enter

    Grub should disappear... Hopefully...

Hmmm, that's weird. This method is recommended for NT systems... There is another one - preparing bootable CD with Win98 startup files and using format /mbr but it's not recommended for WinXP - it is only last chance...

Maybe some of the GRUB files are hiding in the recovery partition, but I don't want to destroy that one. It would be nice to have that future if I want to recover my laptop... Hm... I don't want to format again. Boring stuff. :?

Re: Remove GRUB from MBR (A150)?

I've used this method before on my desktop pc when I tried Ubuntu.

    Here is what I do:

1.- Place the MBRFIX.exe on the root folder of the drive ( in my case C:\ )
    2.- Open a command prompt ( cmd.exe )
3.- Navigate to the root folder of your drive ( cd C:\ )
    4.- Write this:

    Code:
    MbrFix /drive 0 fixmbr /yes
5.- Now, reboot and grub should be gone.

Even though this worked for me several times I can't guarantee it will work on your one, so proceed at your own risk.

Re: Remove GRUB from MBR (A150)?

I had a similar problem, but whenever I tried to get into the recovery console through a windows U3 install I kept gettign a blue screen. Finally, the only way I was able to get the windows bootloader back was by using linux.

    http://www.arsgeek.com/2008/01/15/how-t ... tu-livecd/

That didn't fix the blue screen problem though...so I had to do a non-u3 usb install.
