    first, download this!
    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_u ... EDIT32.zip
attention, Vista users, you have to set it to run as administrator and set compatibility to Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
    1) Go in the bios and disable the D2D recovery option.

    2) Open partedit32.

    3) Identify the PQservice partition by its size (there is an information box at the bottom of the partedit window) it is the small sized partition approximately 4 to 9 GB.Once made change the type of your partition into 12 or 0C(FAT32) to 07(NTFS) and save. Reboot and now you should be able to navigate inside the PQservice partition. (you will be able to see the partition)

    Search for these two files:

    mbrwrwin.exe

    rtmbr.bin

When localized open a command prompt windows as an administrator and enter this command "D:" (or which ever letter for the recovery partition) then "mbrwrwin.exe install rtmbr.bin" (all done without the quotes of course), to install the Acer MBR. Close the command prompt, reboot again your laptop, reactivate the D2D recovery in the bios. Now ALT+F10 should work and run the Acer eRecovery when the laptop starts.

Just so that all you guys are aware that Winload.exe might go missing after this attempt, but, no worries, use your usb flash drives and go to fix computer startup, after that, it will go all fine. it might show up with some ugly name like, windows vista (tm) ultimate (recovered), but you can change it with bcdedit.exe

try running the command prompt as administrator.
    remember, it is
    D: (enter)
then it should look like this
    D:/
    then type in
    mbrwrwin.exe install rtmbr.bin (enter)
then it should say success or something. make sure you know the letter of your recovery partition.

plug in your flash drive, and then vista install disk should say what language you want it in, and stuff, after finishing that, it should say Install Now button, on the bottom of that window, click repair my computer.

nope. you need to boot into your install disk, like your usb flash drive or usb cd.

Ok, I followed the directions here, however I am still getting the "Partition fail to be formatted" when i enter eRecovery (alt-f10). Any thoughts?

ps, i did "repair my computer" from the vista install cd, but that still won't let me reinstall winxp from teh recovery partition.

ok, looks like i solved this problem (for myself anyways).

When I got the error that I couldn't format in the recovery console, I installed a OEM copy of XP home (using cd key from the bottom of the aa1), then ran through this entire process again starting from step 1.

right now its reloading XPH from the recovery, and I dont forsee any issues. I will post here with my progress.

I've tried this several times but the drive never shows up and it keeps reverting back to 12. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this to work?

Yep. I'm in XP and I restart and go to My Computer and the partition doesn't show up.
When I run the edit program again, it shows that it's reverted back to 12. Hmm.

are you sure you changed the right partition?
remember, it is the partition with 4-7 gigs.
and did you disable the d2d recovery in BIOS?

    Yes I followed the directions.

Not sure why that partition remains as 12 and not 07. Nothing that I do will keep it at 07 after I restart.
    Any ideas?

there should be a partition with a name of compaq diag. after unlocking, it will be called pqservice.

I see it when I go to Manage the drives but I cannot mount it. It still shows as FAT not NTFS.

Do you think this has something to do with the fact that this is the newer AAO XP/160gb/6 cell unit?
