Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

glad that you got snow leo installed :)

you should consider voodoohda for sound (must be installed in /S/L/E, i can't get it work in Extra)
it works great here, didn't even have any lag/stutter compared to leopard

voodoops2, batt kext works in extra though
and i can't check if atheros works coz i too have a dw1390 in my aao

Yes there is. If you have the iso or dmg of the snow leopard build you can mount it and clone it with SuperDuper onto an external USB drive. At least the drive was bootable on my Mac and I was able to install Snow Leopard there. Didn't try it with the AAO.

Why should I not try it with my AAO?

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

You should restore the dmg onto a partition on your ext hd, than install pcefi9 and the special boot file (ref to my 1st post)
Restoring the dmg alone doesn't make the hd boot. (you can try with chameleon 2 i guess)

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

It seems to work for me with SP1950's instructions. Except that I do not have the Boot-132 USB and I just use the same external USB drive with the 10a380 restored on it to boot, with the boot parameters "-v rd=disk0s2" on step 16.

Just one question. Should I be updating to the 10a394 that shows up with software update?

Of course! I got it updated yesterday. The Dock Expose looks so cool!
You will have to rebuild your own extra Extensions.mkext.
Add only Disabler, dsmos, VoodooPS2, UUID, (VoodooPower if you like)
Use Kexthelper to install voodoohda, realtekr1000, appleacpibatterymanager into /S/L/E/ coz they are dependent on other system kexts which are updated in this release.
And patch the gma950 again using the same command script.
I guess there's no auto-reboot between the update process, ie once it shutdowns and shows the desktop, it is already 10a394.

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

Thanks SP1950... May I ask you how to rebuild the Extensions.mkext? Can I move all kext to /S/L/E/ instead of /Extra/ ? Can you give me some more instructions for 10a394? Thanks!

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

Try googling MKextTool, and I guess it is from insanelymac.
You just drag & drop what you need, browse to your /Extra/ folder, and hit build
I think it should work if you install all the kexts into /s/l/e, but I just install those which are dependent on other io****.kext s (eg realtekr1000, voodoohda) into /s/l/e because the io****.kext s are updated at each build.
Remember to remove the 27ae-patched kexts and repatch them after updating to the new seed.
What I leave in the extra mkext are disabler, dsmos, voodoops2, uuid, and voodoopowermini.

You can still boot into 10a394 with the original mkext anyway, but there are lots of debug info saying that there is a newer io****.kext s.

    Good luck!

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

Thanks SP1950! I am not very familiar with the mkext thingy... With 10.5 Leopard I just install iDeneb and I did not have much experience about that... Do you mind to upload your Extensions.mkext for 10a394 like the one you did for 10a380? Thanks a lot...!

i was going through your tutorial, and i was receiving the same kp that you were a while ago. so i did the kextcache command, but it returns "no supported helper partitions to update"
    any ideas?

    try rebooting.
it is normal to get that message.
just make sure you do the cmd in the terminal from the snow leopard install dvd.
and keep your hands away from typing "-f" at the boot screen FOREVER!!!
you will instantly get this kp and have to do this over again.

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

    ok, its still kp'ing.
this is what i did EXACTLY
    0. in my original leopard install
    1. copied Extenstions.mkext to /Volumes/SnowHD/Extra
    2. rebooted and plugged in the ext drive with the dvd image on it
    3. chose my language
    4. opened a terminal window
    5. kextcache -update-volume /Volumes/SnowHD
    6. quit terminal and quit the installer
    7. same kp when trying to load Snow Leopard

btw: i didnt use any kernel flags and i copied the boot.plist and boot file as you instructed

edit 1: oops, i think i found my problem, i had the stock boot.plist in the Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and your modified one in the /Extra

edit 2: nope...still kp'ing and when i start it in verbose mode, it looks as if it loads everything from the Extensions.mkext fine
and i think this is where i should say that i dloaded a modded OSInstall.mkpg that would allow Snow to be installed onto mbr

edit 3: i was reading at insanelymac.com and there was a post on how to speed up the install dvd's boot time. it required replace the Extensions.mkext and at the end, it said to repair the owner and group of the .mkext
    Code:
then I repaired the owner and group:
    sudo chown root:wheel /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ x86/System/Library/Extensions.mkext
i will post (edit this one actually) back with my results

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

No, the Extensions.mkext is NOT in /S/L/ anymore!!
so that chown should help nothing

    If you still have kp,
    1. wipe your current sl partition CLEAN
    2. Install SL onto it
    3. Reboot and see if things work
    4. If not, boot again using the install disc (try NOT to use anything older than 10.6 coz i heard the mkext thing is changed and could be the cause of kp)
    5. do the kextcache command WITH YOUR SL PARTITION

if you still can't get it to work, i think you really have to wipe the whole hd clean and create a new one using gpt...
at least that's what i did in order to get it working and saves a lot of trouble for future releases
