Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed

I hope i'm not braking the rules ;)

you can get all info you need from this page:
    http://forums.msiwind.net/osx-installin ... 27-40.html

and the boot file is on the 2nd page: http://forums.msiwind.net/download/file.php?id=1092

i do not take any credit of the tutorial coz i'm nnot the one who wrote it!

i myself restored the dmg to an ext hd, installed pcefi9 & the boot file on it, reboot, and install to a gpt partition (ignore the error in setup at the end, it's ready to go)

kexts u can use for sl:
    voodoops2controller.kext
    appleacpibatterymanager.kext
    voodoohda.kext (must install in /s/l/e)
r1000 (or something like that) (must install in /s/l/e or copy the depending kexts to /extra/extensions)

use 27aepatch (get from the same topic from the link) to patch gma950 kext

DO NOT try to use alcinject... hda... appleps2nub... or even gma950 kexts available
snow leo is new... it needs new kexts

use mkexttool to build extensions.mkext, put it in /Extra

NOTE::: if u had kp like the one on my 1st post, refer to my solution in the first post

p.s. i will write a better walkthru if i have time this week

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed

Hmm .. I just installed Snow Leopard on my real Mac and I have to say ... most of the features are old. It just offers you better performance. I mean ... really. The only reason why I would want to install this on my Acer would be a better battery time. Just faster and quicker or things that aren't helpful for the AAO like chinese hanzi. http://www.apple.com/macosx/refinements/
Sorry .. I am very disappointed.
Could anyone compare how the battery time is at
    10.5.6
    10.5.7
    10.6
Under 10.5.6 I only have 1.5-2 hours which sucks.

The whole point of SL is refintement.
How can you not be happy with better performace?

And rhanks for the great guide, I think I will whack SL on at some point...

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed

I don't need that power on my Acer, I'm recording on it using GarageBand and it plays back just as fine as my 1.83GHz dual core mac mini (2GB ram), I don't think, refintement makes the AAO go faster than this .. The things I'd like to have don't work haha: Faster wake-up (no sleep) and faster internet connection (No Dell 1339 installed).

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed

it's true that not many new functions work on aao (gcd, chinese handwriting [not a real apple multitouch trackpad])

but the performance is much better imho! i always get it boot (with desktop) within 25 sec, and sometimes leopard took me anywhere from 20 sec to 1 min to login screen

for me, i would stay with 10a380 until the gm is out
what could be better than vanilla ht support?
i must say the animations are much smoother!
widgets in dashboard now fade in, but not bump in as in leopard
transition animations in iwork apps are much smoother too
and the menubar of sys pref will not "disappear" now
i can also watch 720p mkv now with mplayer ext (a lil bit jerky, but not the complete green screen)
safari is unsable though, the menubar & bookmark bar are somehow invisible, and the top of the webpage contents goes nowhere... :x firefox works anyway but safari is better for me

snow leopard is not written for hacks anyway, especially netbooks today
you can't expect too much for netbooks
but the tweaks are definitely true and useful
i guess the $29 upgrade is worth it for real mac & leopard users :)
i will definitely buy an upgrade disc for my hack when it comes out :p

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed

yep, sleep still doesn't work for a380
but you can always swap the wlan card with an 802.11n card or even a genuine apple airport card ;)
    that's not the sl's prob

imho the overall performance is now about xp on aao (but lack of smooth 720p playback), and way much faster than vista/win7

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

just curious, but i dloaded your boot.plist just to look at it (need a working leopard install =/) and i saw the key "device properties" and its very long string...whats that all supposed to do?

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

that is why i have to upload my plist :)

it is an efi string for gma950 (a replacement for natit)
if u boot without this string/w/o natit, u will NEVER gonna see the desktop :(
i'm not sure why, but just make sure you either have natit added in the extra extension or use this string

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

ok, thanks, until i find a way to get leopard onto my aao (leopard_hd_installer is a little female dog...) or until i can borrow my friend's mac, i can only dream of snow leopard =P
and by item 6, do u mean the mkext, or the external drive?

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

Honestly, at this point, would it be worth it to install snow leopard as an end user?

Re: Snow Leopard - I got it installed + guide

Well, I heard that it is NOT possible to directly upgrade/update to the GM Snow Leopard.
i.e. you have to wipe it clean and perform a retail install.

But if you have time for another install in around Sep/Aug, and you can get the dmg easily, go ahead!
10A380 is totally usable and very stable for normal use. You should really try it if you want vanilla HT support.

Just make sure you have a separate partition (or ext drive) for data now, and this will save a lot of trouble for the retail install later.

Honestly, at this point, it would be the same reasons as to install windows 7 as an end user.
