I'd like to see what extra applications people like putting on their Linpus Acer system. Everyone can see what the laptop gets used for. And if you see an application some one has installed that you want or need help with, you can PM (personal message) them and ask for a howto.

Here's what's I've got installed as of 9-3-2008 (not necessarily in this order):
livna ---- (this is a repo which has many extra application you "can" install)
freshrpms ---- (this is a repo which has many extra application you "can" install)
airsnort ---- (AirSnort is a wireless LAN (WLAN) tool which recovers encryption keys.)
iptraf ---- (this is a console application that reveals ip address and packet feeds of all connections)
xchat ---- (this is an IRC program "Internet Relay Chat"... advanced users can get files from peers)
aircrack-ng ---- (WEP and WPA-PSK keys cracking program that can recover keys once enough data packets have been captured.)
kismet ---- (Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system.)
gimp ---- (GNU Image Manipulation Program. Almost as powerful as Adobe Photoshop I might say. And Free)
traceroute ---- (Get's all the IP addresses for every computer connected through to destination IP/computer.)
telnet ---- (A console login for other systems on the network or the internet.)
xkill ---- (When you can't close a program run this by Alt-F2 then type xkill and hit enter. The next thing you click the mouse on exits.)
azureus ---- (Only the best and fastest p2p file downloader. Downloads from many people at once for fastest speeds. See "bit torrent")
gedit ---- (a full fledged, full featured text editor with less memory and CPU consumption then open office)
bluefish ---- (a web page source code editor)
mencoder ---- (for encoding your own videos. Install this with a package manager and you will get lots of codecs to play videos under mplayer... adds support for mkv files even from azureus)
k3b ---- (this is a CD/DVD burner application... useful if you get an external drive)
k3b-extras-nonfree --disablerepo=freshrpms ---- (adds mp3 to audio CD along with other features)
    ffmpeg ---- (a video codec)
    qt4 ---- (a GUI library skype requires)
    qt4-x11 ---- (a GUI library skype requires)
    redhat-rpm-config ---- (a library skype requires)
    skype ---- (VOIP/instant messenger)
aescrypt ---- (256bit encryption for any file you want to secure)
gcc ---- (GNU's C Compiler... for programmers to compile C and C++ code)
libmatroska ---- (a video codec to play mkv files)
libdvdcss ---- (the file(s) required if you want to watch any DVD movies)
    gcc-java ---- (java compiler)
    libstdc++devel ---- (c++ development libraries)
opera ---- (A nice web browser. Just in case I have trouble with firefox)
    libmad ---- (MP3 ecnoding/decoding... I believe it helps k3b?)

    Edit:
Oh, and I installed 'alpine' console web application simply for the amazing console text editor it includes called 'pico'.
    Edit 2:
I inserted descriptions of each package just as I was requested. Enjoy!

Just about to start this exact thread.
Can people also post what they have on their windows machines. I'm interested in seeing what people use to make their One the ultimate power tool.

A "power tool" running any version of Windows? You're kidding, right? :)

    Cheers.

Just a thought, but since this thread is likely to be primarily populated by posts from advanced Linux users, can you also put a short one-liner next to each app, so that us n00bs can see what things are, what's worth having, and what's not?

Now I only installed 3 little things:

The switch desktop: Cange beetween the Acer Aspire One enviroment to Xfce standar enviroment.
apt-get: To download and install packages from terminal.
openssh-client: To get a ssh connection with some devices (wifi routers)

From now I have to get a olsr version running in my AS-1, To provide dynamic routing in a mesh wifi network.

But I feel this is only the beginning. :)

Yeah but this listing is apps only. Howto's are PM's. I saw that listing before I created this one. This isn't a skype help topic.

Another must have app is "man" which is a command line manual program. You can use it to look up how to use most any command.
