    FOR SOLUTION SEE LAST POST

Hi Folks ,hoping you can help,

I've signed up to T-Mobile's mobile Broadband service, but cannot get up and running with the dongle. I've read through all the posts, but none have helped.

I have the basic ASPIRE One (whatever the first one was called)using Linpus with all the updates, including the Huawei patch which added the Mobile Partner software.

The dongle is T-Mobile's 530. I have not been able to confirm whether or not this is actually a Huawei modem or some other brand. Does anyone know?

In a nutshell,my problem is that when I run the Mobile Partner software, it gives the error message: "The device is unavailable or has been disconnected."

I have created a profile, but suspect the problem is before this stage.

Following advice on this forum I've tried disconnecting the Wifi first, rebooting with the dongle, without the dongle etc. All have the same result. I've also unmounted the ZeroCD volume as suggested.

The modem itself has a flashing blue light. A couple of times this has flashed green, but I've not figured out how to get make it do this consistantly.

    Summary:
Can anyone confirm whether the 530 is a Huawei modem?
Does anyone know what the different led sequences mean?
and err... how do I make it work?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Problems with T-Mobile 530 USB Dongle

Thanks to Japser finding the article showing who made the modem, I've done a bit more digging.

This link , http://www.option.com/en/products/produ ... for-linux/ , on the Option website says that they do have a version of their connect software for Linux. It also states that it has EEE PC and ASPIRE One Support!

But, I cannot find the software on their site. So I've emailed them asking where to find it. I'll let you know if I get a reply.

EDIT: This site: http://www.pharscape.org/index.php appears to specialise in Option hardware. But so far no luck with the Icon 431.

Re: Problems with T-Mobile 530 USB Dongle

In the list I made [http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=4435] it says: ( in the 0af0 part )

So, theoretically your device -is- supported by the Acer-Linpus-One.

The module is called "hso" .

So lets see what happens when you plug it in: do the command

    dmesg

before and after plugging and look at the last lines.
    And post what looks interesting.

Re: Problems with T-Mobile 530 USB Dongle

    Afternoon Japser,

After inserting the modem, the following lines are added to the output of dmesg:

usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi5 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
    usb-storage: device found at 4
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
    usb-storage: device scan complete
scsi 5:0:0:0: CD-ROM ZCOption HSUPA Modem PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
    sr0: scsi-1 drive
    sr 5:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
sr 5:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 5
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1
    ISOFS: changing to secondary root

EDIT: After ejecting the ZeroCD volume, there is no change in the dmesg output.
EDIT 2: Actually thats not true. After ejecting the volume the last two lines of the dmesg output repeat themselves:
    "
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1
    ISOFS: changing to secondary root
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1
    ISOFS: changing to secondary root
    "

Re: Problems with T-Mobile 530 USB Dongle

Well, probably you found ( and tried ? ) this:
    http://pharscape.org/ozerocdoff.html

Problem is that these general linux solutions expect a general linux situation and Linpus is not very general.
( This involves compiling. But there is also a binary included. )

My very own -guess- is: I wonder what happens if you do a

    sudo modprobe -v hso

after ejecting this 'cd'. ( use dmesg to see what happens )

p.s. : Also Vodafone K3760 has the same ID: 0af0:7501

    Hi Japser,

Found it, yes. Tried it, no. Err...... the make command is not working for me, I get command not found. I assume I'm missing some package, any suggestions?

sudo modprobe -v hso returns nothing before or after ejecting the volume.

    sudo modprobe -l *hso* returns
    /lib/modules/2.6.23.9lw/kernel/drivers/net/wwan/hso.ko

Re: Problems with T-Mobile 530 USB Dongle

    Japser,

Well possibly a step forward. Your link sorted out my compiling problem, thanks

When I plug in the dongle now the ZeroCD volume does not appear, but I get the error "The WWAN device could not report the PIN mode!"

    dmesg now reports:
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi2 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
    usb-storage: device found at 5
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 5
usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    hso: /usr/src/lawson/hso/hso.c: 1.3 Option Wireless
    hso: Registering procfs
    HSO: Found Diagnostic port /dev/ttyHS0
    HSO: Found Application port /dev/ttyHS1
    HSO: Found Control port /dev/ttyHS2
    HSO: Found Network port hso0
    HSO: Found Modem port /dev/ttyHS3
    Not our interface
usbcore: registered new interface driver hso
usb 2-2: USB disconnect, address 2

So making progress, but Mobile Partner still says "The device is unavailable or has been disconnected."

Hmm, just noticed that 3G is appearing in the prefferences list under the connection manager. Wonder what happens if I turn off the wifi?

    I'll post this first.

    And I'm online.

Thanks to Japser for his help and hints.

    Summary:

Go here , http://pharscape.org/ozerocdoff.html , download and compile.
Turn off the wifi via the switch on the front
    Turn off the laptop
    Plug the dongle in
    turn the laptop on
In the bottom right hand corner the connection icon should show a blue 3G
Dont bother with MobileManager just run up firefox and hopefully you should be in.

Bonus hint: Go to www.quidco.com to get discounts on a variety of mobile broadband contracts. I got £73 pounds off the 2 year T-Mobile contract. By my calculations thats 3gb a month for just over £11 a month.

    Hi SG, Jasper

    followed your Post (I also have a T-mobile 530 dongle/ Opinion)

    downloaded the udev.tar.gz software

    ran the command

    sudo yum update fedora-release

    and installed lots of files

    then ran

sudo yum install gcc make (all ok)

    ./config (does not work)

so cannot figure out how to compile it.

I have read the README and I am a complete Linux Newbie..

I have extracted into multiple files

    including Makefile
    ozerocdoff.c
    hso.udev

just cannot figure out how to compile this. I assume I have to install the C compiler then run a makefile.

can anyone assist please.. spent over 1 day trying everything... I am logged in as root also..

    Many thanks
    Pete

First of all it seems quite impossible to me that a newcomer to Linux even tries to compile stuff.
But you have come a long way already.
From what I read I think you should be able to run the command 'make' in the directory where these files have landed.
Just follow the directions from the Pharscape site.

    Hi Jasper,

thanks for your reply.. I'm ok with Windows, computers etc but never used Linux, Unix..

I want to switch to Linux but this has really changed my decision as it's all cryptic...

The lack of plug and play ,, hurts... ;-)

I followed the steps on Pharscape site (but obviously missing something)

unzipped the files into a folder
    went into the folder

    installed the compiler

using sudo yum install gcc make

    got no errors...

    when I try the command

    ./config

Which I think is some script or similar. It gives file or command not found

    tried running Make

    then

sumo make install ,,, etc etc

    nothing to run make for...

Thanks for your help will keep plugging away...

I tried it myself on my Debian machine. ( It is not a 'One' )

    make

gives 'nothing to do' or something like that ( translated back to english )

    make install

tried doing things, but failed because I was not 'root'.

Note: unix/linux is case-sensitive: 'Make' is not the same as 'make'

    thanks for the reply jasper.

    When I run

    make install (as root)

    it displays

    install -d /usr/sbin
    make: install: Command not found
    make: *** [install] Error 127

looking up this error I see it could be not installed.

    so tried again running

    sudo yum install gcc make

    setting up Install process
    Parsing package install Arguments

Package gcc - 4.1.2-33.i386 is already installed
package make - 1:3.81-11.fc8.i386 is already installed

    nothing to do...

am I missing a Path to this compiler ?

On my macine it looks like this ( now done as root ):
    After that I did:
So, make calls another command: install that lives in /usr/bin/
In the Acer-dvd-image that I have on my computer I can find it.

So, what happens if you do

    which install

    ?

Did not see the end of your post yet, you alread did 'which install', so that seems to be the problem ?

    install install

    ??
