    Hi,

There are lots of posts on how to get VLC working on linux, with various diferent methods, and differing versions of acquiring codecs, and I thank everyone who's taken the time to post in one. This seems to be one of the most-asked beginners questions, and I think that even those people who use search before asking are a bit overwhelmed by the differing results.

Would some kind person please write a newbie-level definitive how-to, with a fool-proof method to get VLC with codecs installed and on the desktop. It doesn't really matter which method it is, just so long as it can be used to direct new users. Unfortunately, I rather stumbled to victory on getting my VLC in, so I don't think I could write a decent explanation.

    Thanks in advance, Mark
