    After much searching around on the forums without much joy I've decided to post my first topic in the hope that someone can save me!

    I'm having real problems linking to my epson DX6000 all in one printer via usb. I have managed to get a printout via my local network computer but this isn't much good to me as that machine is going asap due to me and the other half getting the AAO and a new vista laptop.

    I've attached the printer and it seems to have installed choosing the Stylus Color Pro driver but when I print I get the little printer in the corner but nothing coming out of the printer itself!

    I've downloaded the sane software as that seemed to look like what I needed for the scanner but it doesn't seem to pick it up.

    I'd appreciate any advice anyone could give me... I have quite a good xp/vista & OSX background so I'm getting a bit irrate that I can't sort it.

    Thanks in advance,

    Rebecca.

    Just a quick one... I'm following your instructions but when filling out the questionaire for the correct driver it asks me what OS I'm using... and I don't know how to find out. I'm guessing it's fedora but it also wants to know a distribution version.

    I'd appreciate some advice.

    fedora 8 but that's not there...
    So, I think I'd try FedoraCore and Others... see how that goes.
    Try installing with
    rpm -Uvh pipslite-1.2.0-1.i386.rpm
    see what it says...

    Cool...printer now works a treat but the scanner software just says "Failed to open device 'v4l/dev/video0': invalid argument."

    Any ideas?

    No really, but there are some things to try...
    Try rebooting with the scanner plugged in.
    What's the scanning software you're using?
    try running it as root (i.e. prefex the command with sudo), e.g.
    $ sudo xsane
    (see: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2617&p=17440&hilit=scanner#p17440)
    Does dmesg tell you anything intesting?
    p.s. glad the printer works :)

    Hi again, I'm just using the scanner tool that seems to have appeared after I installed the sane stuff using add/remove programs. It's in the graphics section when I right click. Going to try rebooting with it plugged in... be back in a sec.

    WOW... it says something about running xsane as root, that is really dangerous. Don't post any error reports when running it as root... you are on your own! Scary... should I click continue?

    Tried it and still get the same response... it's recognising the printer fine so I can't understand why it can't see the scanner!

    I might be a "permissions" thing...
    (which is why I suggested sudo)
    You could try
    $ sudo chmod 777 /dev/video0
    see if that helps?
    If not, what does
    $ ls -l /dev/video*
    give you?

    Grrrrr.... no still not working... so sorry about all this! Bad news is too that the printer doesn't seem to work again now! Printed the test page lovely but it won't print from open office! It's a pesky little machine this one!

    Can you copy and paste what:
    $ ls -l /dev/video*
    and
    $ sudo find / | grep epson
    give you?

    Hi Rebecca,
    I ask the above because of this web page:
    http://reddevil62-techhead.blogspot.com ... nux-2.html
    It might be that if you find the epson.conf file and edit as described the scanner will just work
    (still might need to use sudo, maybe not).
    The printer should work too if it can print a test page, I'd retrace the steps used to get it working before.
    Sometimes printing can take a while, so be patient.

    Good luck, -Duncan.

    "I found a posting which referred to the steps needed to configure a Stylus 4400, which looked like they might be helpful and which go something like this:

    In a terminal run:

    lsusb

    and look for the line that contains “Buses xxx Device xxx: ID 04b8: xxxx Sieko Epson Corp.”
    Note the Buses xxx and Device xxx, just for future reference, but the important part is the xxxx - this is your printer model (the 04b8 bit = Epson).
    In a terminal run:

    sudo mousepad /etc/sane.d/epson.conf

    Find the line reading:

    #usb 0x? 0x?

    and delete the hash, delete the 1st ? and replace it with 04b8, then delete the 2nd ? and replace it with the xxxx printer model

    Look further down and delete the hashes on these lines:

    #usb /dev/usbscanner0
    #usb/dev/usb/scanner0

    and now save epson.conf.

    Once I had done this, I restarted Sane and it detected my scanner, correctly identified as a DX6000"

    [user@localhost ~]$ ls -l /dev/video*
