Partitions

    Hello, I have just bought a new Acer desktop, with 500gb of hard drive capacity.There are 4 partitions
    1 The recovery partition 13 gb
    2 System Reserved 100mb
    3 C 226 gb
    4 D 226gb
    Can someone tell me why the 500 gb partition has been split into two. I back all my photos etc onto an external HD.
    Also, if I wanted ( which I probably won't ) How would I merge the two, to make C drive 500gb
