Here's a really unexpected problem, hope somebody can help me...

I have enabled advanced desktop on Limpus, and successfully used Package Manager for installing VLC.

Today I was trying to do the same with Skype, but...the Package Manager simply does not open by clicking on the "System/AddRemove Software)" voice of the menu.

It actually prompts for the root password, but after typing it the password request windows disappears and nothing happens. I know that the internet connection is working because I can normally surf on Firefox. I know I don't need any proxy settings... I know the password is the right one because I can go root on Terminal. So I can't explain.

    Any help? Thanks in advance.

    "Any tips?"

Yes, based on what you posted you have a couple of errors.

    rm-f/var/lib/rpm/__db

You left out some spaces and the final *

    rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*

rm is a command, -f is an option (force) and needs to be separated from the command with a space, /var... is a directory and needs to be separated from the command and option, and there are several __db files so you need to include the * as a wildcard.

    Thank you Ace_Rimmer and atarione!

Glad to help, but now I need some assistance with the same thing!

When I run Add/Remove programs it appears to start to download repository info, but then just appears to stall out as if the server is not responding. I have tried several times and have applied the fix recommended here, but still can't make any progress. The program isn't crashing; I can terminate it normally and it just says the download isn't complete and asks if I want to continue.

Anyone else having a similar problem? It appears to be on the server end, but I really can't be sure.

Well, never mind! After dragging along for ten or 15 minutes it started to respond and now I am looking at the list of packages on the screen. Don't know what was going on with it. Couldn't make any progress this past weekend on several tries. Maybe there was a server update going on.
