The version of OpenOffice that came with the Aspire One has a known bug. Sometimes, the bold/italics/underline buttons (or CTRL + B/I/U) won't work at all. When it happens to you, just hit CTRL + SHIFT + SPACE BAR and it should be gone. Sometimes weird things can happen (like whole sentences appear underlined) but by then it should work fine.
