    I've just purchased a portable hdd to use with my AA1 - which I will use on holiday in combination with a card reader to transfer digital pics across from my 350d.

    However, as it's NTFS the AA1 doesn't recognise it.

    I've been told on another forum that I could install ntfs-3g

    Has anyone done this and found it successful - if so, what's the process?

    Connect the One to the internet, open up a terminal and type:

    sudo yum install ntfs-3g

    Sit back, wait for the installation to complete and it works.
    At least, it did for me.

    if you arent familier with linux there is also a programm called "ntfs-config" which should make it pretty easy configuring that external hdd, to mount it automatically with read/write access.

    I actually used the package manager from the advanced menu - pulled in both of the NTFS-3G packages (ntfs-3g and ntfs-3g-config) and a 320GB drive I couldn't get connected before now works flawlessly. Just plugged it in and it worked. I have a couple other drives I'll be doing some testing with ranging from 60GB to 500GB over the next week or so. If I have problems I'll post here but I'm not expecting any...

    Thanks Grim - that worked a treat, I didn't expect it to be that easy :)

    @ ichbinesderelch -I attached the drive and it picked it up fine, and I could read a pdf stored on it (as a test) fine - I didn't try to write to it though... ill give that try tonight

    Grim;

    Worked for me as well. Bought a Maxtor 160 today, and it went online without a hitch....a real surprise for a newbie such as myself.

    BTW, the Maxtor is powered by the USB, and comes with a dual USB cable; found that a short, single cable worked just as well on my (3 day old) Aspire One.

    Anyway, "thanks"....

    When I tried to run this it listed a new kernel. I am concerned that this may cause a kernel problem. Is this kernel that comes with ntfs-3g a fedora one or an acer aspire one kernel?

    TIA

    I assume fedora, but I have never had any message demanding that I update the kernel... intruiging. Perhaps you need to update yum as explained in the big readme thread ?

    To Zack: yes.
