Hello all, I am new to this forum. Just opened up my new Aspire One A110-1588...this is the just released model with Windows XP 2002 service pack 3, pre-installed on the built in 16 GB SSD (no hard-drive). Well I must admit, Acer got it right with this configuration, it's blazing fast on running my apps, excellent internet connectivity, what more could you want? I have an external 40GB for running larger apps as required. There is an additional on-board 8 GB SD card (included) and with all the USB ports and on-line storage there is virutally unlimited storage capability. The windows comes pre-installed with Google side bar so the desktop acts completely like Vista! Could not be more pleased with the speed and ease of use of the new Acer One Aspire, and the on-line price of $285 makes it an unresistable buy. I have yet to see anyone else review this model, so your comments are welcome.

Little confused... The internal SSD is 16gb? Not standard 8gb plus 8gb SD card in left slot? And you say there is an additional onboard 8gb SD card??
Just exactly how much SSD and SD memory is there in these "new" models?

Total included storage is 16GB, 8 GB built in SSD + 8 GB sd card included; sorry for any confusion. Was tempted to opt for a 16 GB or even a 32 GB SD card as prices continue to fall...

Doesn't Windows XP take up more space than 8gb? Maybe XP Home is smaller, but how much space is left on the SSD with just XP and nothing else on it?

I'm seriously considering getting the SSD XP version of the Aspire One, I have a (very) portable 180gb external HD and the better performance of the SSD is a big incentive for me. Is it also true that the SSD uses less battery juice than a regular HD?

I nLited my XP Home, deleting a few parts. My install is about 450mb. Full XP Home is somewhere around 650mb IIRC. Loaded up with FF3, Quicken, VLC, CCCleaner, Avira AV, Palm Desktop and SplashID, Gnumeric Spreadsheet and Abiword, Solitaire and FreeCell totals about 2.5gb. Runs quite fast on 8gb SSD.

I've seen these on Dabs. I'll stick to hard drive version - more storage.
Someone asked if Windows XP takes more space than 8GB - No! XP Professional or Media Centre Edition would take up about 4 GB or less and XP Home would be about the same, just a little less.

I'm using this model right now

    2.5gb free on ssd

I'm hoping the restore cd doesn't include office 2007 demo and mcafee preinstalled on it though .. will try and find out. It comes with the restore cd's so no need to call and order/ask for them.

it's as fast as I expect it to be ... it hesitates occasionally but i'm not sure if it's the unit or the fact my wireless router is two floors down

My XP Pro folder is 1.57GB. I've got the internal SSD plus two 8GB SD cards plus a 4GB USB stick that I use occasionally. That's plenty for XP and a few apps and games..Movies and music are what obviously take up a lot of space, but there's still enough space for quite a few movies in DivX format.

Didn't know that there's a SSD version with XP pre-installed. It does require quite a few tweaks to work around the slow write speed of the drive.

I am going to remove the trial version of Office 2007 after trying it a few times, nice interface but not worth the disk space, and besides it will expire in 60 days. I believe the included Works will open office docs anyway. Looks like my install of XP is 2.29 GB, how did JimmiG get it down to 1.57? Thanks for your replies.

Well I just removed Office 2007 Trial version and my available disk space went from 2.30 GB to 3.65 GB free !!! I kept the Works program however.

With only 7.40 GB "available" on the formatted SSD, it now shows just about 1/2 full.

To reduce the size of XP further you need to reinstall using one of the special, trimmed versions that are available online, such as TinyXP.

I can clean a stock XP install down to about 1.1gb. nLite can get it down further.

I am interested to know why the SSD versions are finally being released with XP. Driver updates to the SSDs in the older models? Or an entirely new SSD?
