Hi. Just wanted to say hello.
Yesterday i got my Aspire one, 8gb SSD (Samsung SSD :D ). I tried it with linpus for about 5 min, could'nt get the keyboard input correct nor get applications installed on first try so i got sick of it  . Installed nLited XP sp2 witch integreted drivers following a bunch of tutorials, and it worked right away.
First had som freezing problems but after some tweaks i would say it runs OK now. divx movie plays flawlessly, so does MP3 while browsing the web. Got good help from this site so i tought I'd join. I have about 35mb/s read time from ssd. Is that normal? Don't know the write speed yet.

First question is the storage expansion slot. Any way to get that working in XP like it would in Linux?
Second question is that I have a hatch on the bottom och the acer. Looks like a RAM expansion space on a regular laptop, but when i opened it i got cunfused.
No visible connections, just some black plastic. Does all A1 have this? What is it? is it possible that there is the RAM slot under the plastic, becouse i know ther is a free slot. The 512 is soldered, right?

Would be happy if someone could help me shed a light over these things.
(I'm educated and work with both software and hardware, so the technical language and stuff is'nt a problem)

Nah, both expansion slots, SD and the Multi one, are just recognised as card readers in windows. There is a hack to make them seem like HDD's. but it doesn't seamlessly integrate as part of another HDD.
That hatch, you would think it's for RAM wouldn't you. WEll sadly it isn't, it is for the 3G/WiMax cards that Acer says will be released later in the year. However, where there should be the extra mii PCI-E slot right there on the bottom of the motherboard, there is noting. The connector is basically there in terms of circuitry, but no actual block to stick cards in. You may be able to solder one on, or get it done at a service centre, but thats a load of effort...

If you want to upgrade your ram its a matter of taking the entire keyboard and base off and accessing the topside of the motherboard im afraid.. sucks i know

Yeah... I've understood the RAM upgrading process. Good news is I also found the hack rory was talking about. Havn't tried it out yet though. Will do when i get my two 32 gb SDHC cards.
Also tried out some HD 720p AVC vids last night. To my suprise it worked flawlessly :D. Read from a network disk though. Have not had the time to try reading it from the SSD, but it should work with Read speed of 25 -35 mb/s.

My Current setup looks like this:
    Acer Aspire One 110 Blue
    nLited Windows XP sp2
    Internet explorer 7
    Office 2007
    VLC Mediaplayer
    CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)
    Adobe Reader 8
    7-Zip
pHun (Try this one out!! it AWSOME :D)
    NOD32 AV
    Windows Live Messenger
    GIMP 2
    uTorrent

Every one of these programs runs smoothly.

Now the biggest concerne is wheter or not to upgrade the RAM. After all, the RAM is not the bottleneck here, the SSD is. Is it worth it? I remember many years ago that i had XP sp2 on a laptop with 512 mb RAM, using it every day as main computer. No problem there. Heck, I've even had a machine running vLited vista on 512 and XP sp2 on 256! mb RAM. What do you guys think?
Rory, have you got you'r ZIF drive yet?

Well, to prevent SSD deterioration, you should disable the windows disk cache and other disk-intensive stuff as describet all over the place, and when doing that, upgrading the memory to 1.5 GB might propably give you a smoother eXPerience.

Yeah i know! Can sit for hours and play with it :D.

Yeah I've disabled Paging file and Disk chache.
When i get my SDHC cards i will try to put stuff read often there.

Is there any more way to minimize disk write in XP?
