OK, I switched to a "real" desktop using this:

    viewtopic.php?f=31&t=2665

I got everything set up including all the icons and launchers that I wanted and all was well until I realized that my SDHC card (in the expansion slot) was no longer recognized after restart. Thunar always defaults to "standard mode", but if I switch to "advanced mode" and then back to standard the SD card is recognized. Also, on restart there is no /disk mounted in /media, so it is not just a Thunar phenomenon. Every restart goes back to "standard mode" and no SD card mounted.

I love the "real" desktop but the SD card issue is a deal breaker, so I am back to the Acer desktop for now.

Any ideas how to work around this? I tried deleting ~/.config/xfce and letting the system recreate it, but that didn't help and I ended up with a bare xfce desktop at one point.
