My AAO will not shutdown automatically

Hello, i am very new to Linux so i hope this is not a dumb question. At first everything was fine,when i pressed shutdown, it did so promptly. However, now it will no longer do so without me pressing the power button which i assume is not ideal. Someone on another forum has given be a command to type in the Terminal box which does the job & shutdown,but is there a way so restore the proper shutdown process,without the Terminal way or using the recovery disc? Thanks in advance.
