msn messenger protocol error message

hi, I have used messenger successfully on my acer aspire one since i've had it (over a year) but today I just tried to log into my msn account and i get an error message saying " YOUR MSN MESSENGER ACCOUNT (MY ACCOUNT ADDRESS) IS ERROR OUR PROTOCOL IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THE SERVER" I did an updates exercise thinking that would fix it but no, still get the same error message. Any ideas???? :? Thanks in advance,
