OK - I'm stuck. I've searched and read so much that I'm beginning to go round in circles. I'm a Linux newbie - but working hard at it!

I am trying to get mPlayer to play Xvid / Divx files.

In the first instance I have run live update on the system (A110), just out of the box.

I have then run from the Terminal command line....

    sudo rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
    sudo yum update mplayer

This failed with some Missing Dependencies. After further searching I ran...

    sudo yum update fedora-release
    sudo yum update mplayer

This all worked fine - Videos now play but only if I start them from the Terminal command line.

    In a further post...

    viewtopic.php?f=5&t=383&hilit=divx

tokyoturnip seems to have managed to fix the problem by switching on "mplayer -gui" in "Add / Remove applications". He was not sure of exactly the term but that was from memory.

Unfortunatly I don't have a "mplayer -Gui" under Application in my Add/Remove table. The nearest is a Sound & Video option that is unchecked. When I try this I get errors ,,,

    Unresolvable requirement redhat-menus for kdelibs
    Unresolvable requirement redhat-menus >= 1.11 for htmlview
    Unresolvable requirement libgnome-menu.so.2 for gnome-screensaver

Any help would be appreciated. Have I taken a wrong turning somewhere?

    Many thanks,
    RZB

OH dear - No responses :-(

Did I make the post too long, unclear or perhaps it's just a daft question that I should be able to sort out myself !

What's my next best step? Restore to factory setting using the Acer CD that came in the box and then try to install VLC?

    Mant thanks,
    Roy

When you say they only work from the command line, what other method are you trying to use to start them that's failing? Personally I'd just install VLC (there's no need to restore first though).

    Many thanks for your response.

It won't start if I double click on it in File Manager.

Also if I start Media Maser and use the open facility, navigate to the Video folder - the avi file is not visible!

The only way I can start it is to use the Terminal command line and enter mplayer filename

OK - I'll have a go at downloading VLC. Should I do that from the Acer site - I see there is a download on there.

I was just concerned about ...

    sudo yum update fedora-release

that I had used to fix one of my earlier problems. I read in a post, afer I had done it, that I should not be updating from Fedora. I'm a bit concerned that I have broken something - especially as mplayer is showing this problem.

    Many thanks,

Oh - and also right click on the file in File Manager and select Open with "Media Master" doesn't work.

Try adding an alternate GUI for mplayer, like smplayer:

    Code:
    sudo yum install smplayer

If it won't work by double clicking on the avi then it's because mplayer isn't set as the default handler for .avi. Right click on the file, select 'open with other applications', select 'use a custom command', type in mplayer, then make sure 'use as default' it ticked.

Oh oh oh! Yes that worked a treat!!! I thought Media Master and mplayer were the same thing - silly me!

    The avi was pointing at

    /usr/PCM/PCM4/pcm mvp -f %f

I changed it to mplayer as you suggested and hey presto.

    Many thanks,
You have made my day .... :) :)

Now to try to get visibility of the Acer on my Windows home network - I feel a new challenge coming on!
