Checked Microsoft Update site today and noted a new driver listed under Hardware Updates. The update was called Idea Com HID Touch Screen. I downloaded and installed the update . My Touchpad then stopped working completly ,but my USB Mouse was still OK.
Did a system restore to rollback the update to before the update was installed and the touchpad is once again working fine.
I will not be so quick to trust Microsoft and their driver updates for my Aspire One in the future!

had the same problem when i updated my vista, but downloaded the newest driver from http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers and got it to work again, so i guess that the old drivers didnt work with the new updates, so you dont have to stop updating your system;)
