I got my Aspire One earlier this week and I'm having a couple of problems.

Internet works (both wired and wireless) but messenger fails to connect. I tried to connect to an MSN account and a gmail account using the stock messenger and I get an error message (connection error from notification server: unable to connect).

So I figured I'd get around it by installing Pidgin. I followed the steps from the forum to activate the advanced desktop. But when I go to add/remove programs, it fails to connect again (unable to retrieve software information).

    Does anyone have any advice?

    Re: Messenger & Advanced Desktop

I've got the very same problems as you have:
    - Unable to login into my msn account (niether yahoo account) in acerIM
    - unable to install pidgin (nor sMSN).

It seems most of people recomends no using acerIM, but Pidgin or aMSN. But noone gave a detailed installing process for PidGin or aMSN. It seems there are a lot of dependencies problems, but no solution proposed, despite the fact some people succeeded in installing PidGin. what did they do to succeed? noone knows...

the IM client seems to have issues with certain e-mail addys - I can log in fine to the MSN account that hangs off my Hotmail addy, but not to the account that hangs of my AOL account!

    Re: Messenger & Advanced Desktop

I've found a way to install PidGin, and it works.

I'm a n00b, so I tried my best to write enough details to explain step by step how to do it:

    viewtopic.php?f=5&t=747

    good luck

Yes, I did the full update with live update or whatever its called. The update still persists.

I tried connected via ethernet opposed to wireless, and that didn't help my cause either.

From what I've been ready, I gather it might be a proxy issue but I don't understand why Firefox would work then.

    I haven't tried mail.

And to the previous comment, I can't install pidgin because add/remove programs doesn't connect. It can't retrieve the files.

From what I gather, the messenger might be using a specific port that is blocked on DSL.

I don't know which one it is right now, but what we might need to do is call the ISP and see if they know. I'm going to try to connect to the internet using a different connection - maybe a friend's cable model - to see if maybe our ISP is the problem.
