The acer I have was bought as a present and after power on comes up ok without any password request.
I can,t down load or delete files as I get asked for a password as "root" , and no one remembers this!
Will a system restore from the usb take me thru the set password routine again and allow me
to enter a different/new password that I can record . regards

Don't forget to have your passwords hidden somewhere just in case. ;)

You could go into the Grub menu, select the default setting, edit it and add: init=1, this should drop you into singe user mode (command line prompt), then type "passwd USERNAME" (no quotes and your username should be in lower case). This will ask for a new password, enter it re-boot and your good to go with your new password.
