    Hi there,

I am to the point at the moment where I would like to throw my AAO out of the window. I had it on thursday and after a few initial successes (getting connected to the internet, activating advanced mode and installing a few games and other bits), I seem to have hit a brick wall.

Here are the few issues I'm having:
I cannot connect my printer/scanner via usb
Everytime I seem to try to add software it comes up with dependencies that it can't fix
Everytime I try to do a live update it quits out at the installing stage saying it's got a connection error but I'm definatly connected to the internet.
Also I can't play avi files from my digital camera even after loading VLC

I have taken a look around and searched the message boards for answers but I can't seem to make sense of what they say.

I am completely new to linux.

Any help would be very very very much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Rebecca

UPDATE: I still have not managed to fix any of these issues so any help would still be appreciated!

To solve dependancy error. Open a terminal
To open terminal (Alt + F2) Run application box opens in box type
    Code:
    terminal
    then click on Run

    In the terminal type.
    Code:
    sudo yum install fedora-release
    press enter key.
    For explanation see this link.

    Your Vlc issue:
See my last post in this thread. http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=167&start=110

If your camera encodes video with H264 then this may well be the problem.

You can either follow the instructions in the post or install the vanilla vlc

    see here.http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-fedora.html

You need the Fedora 8 version.

Or install from the Livna repositries (which is what I did.)

    Code:
    su -
    Code:
    rpm -ivh [url]http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm[/url]
    Code:
    yum install vlc

Post the details of your printer scanner.

Okay... things are going from bad to worse!

The things I thought were installing didn't... they still had a problem and didn't complete.

I tried to update the repositories thing like you said and when you type in su - command it asks for a password but it won't let me type! Any ideas?

Also my printer is an epson all in one dx6000. It seems to have installed the printer okay but when I send a print job nothing actually happens with the printer. I have installed sane software for the scanner (found it on another post) but it keeps coming up with errors.

Sorry to be a complete pain, I really do want to get along with the AAO but it's baffling me at the mo.

    Love Rebecca xxx

OK Rebecca when you input your password in a terminal it gives you no feedback whatsoever as to what you are typing (No asterix or blobs). So type it correctly in the correct case then press enter.

mmmmmm... okay if I open a file in vcl nothing really happens. In the Mplayer I have the sound plays but still no video!

Not sure if it's something I'm doing?

    Sorry to be a pain,

    Rebecca xxx

Ok found driver for your printer. Page says your printer not included in foomatic (printer drivers that come with acer)
    http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Epson-Stylus_DX6000
Download the x86 32 bit (RPM for LSB 3.1) or if that don't work x86 32 bit (RPM for LSB 3.2) I think Fedora 8 is Linux Standards Base 3.1 complient but I'm not sure.
Double click rpm file to install it.

As a quick trial though try installing the printer as a DX4800 as that may be in foomatic and it apparently works according to a post on the Ubuntu forums.

The scanner part, however should work with sane. :?

Okay so the printer works but the sane thing just says "Failed to open device 'v4l/dev/video0': invalid argument."

Ok which method did you use to install vlc? Did you get any errors in the terminal window when you installed it?

Ok somebody on the fedora forums had the same error with a DX 5050.
His answer was to comment out a duplicate line in
    Code:
    /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
In this file he found two lines for epson.

    epson
    epson2

He commented out epson2 by making the entry look like this
    Code:
    #epson2
To edit this file you need to type into a terminal.
    Code:
    sudo mousepad /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
comment out the line epson2 (if it exists) and save the file.
    Reboot and try sane again.

    Ok open terminal.
    Code:
    su -
    input password
    Then.
    Code:
    yum remove vlc
    Then
    Code:
    yum install vlc
You may loose the desktop Icon but don't worry if you do we can put that back by hand tommorrow.
As a stop gap vlc should be in advanced menu.

    Time for bed for me.

Righty oh, I still can't use live update as it crashes out everytime I give it a go.
I've got the scanner going (and a button added thanks very much!)
Still can't get my printer working... I managed to get a test page printed last night but nothing since!

Think that's about it. It's driving me round the bend to be honest!
