Please post here manufacturer and model of you USB-stick that you have been used in successful reinstall
Also you can post sticks that doesn't work, but tell it clearly.

So working ones:
I have myself installed linpus successful with 4GB PQI Traveling Disk i221.

NOT working:
with Kingston Data Traveler 1 GB USB Flash Drive ( DTI/1GB ) I Couldn't install linpus.
It just wrote console full of BB BB BB BB BB BB BB ..

My gener-o-usb drive (GXT 1GB USB 2.0 Mobile Drive) doesn't seem to want to reinstall the stock OS, which is strange since it installed ubuntu just fine...

EDIT: I was able to get it to read off my usb key, but now it's throwing kernel panics when I try to reinstall :(

SanDisk Cruzer 2GB works fine
I did try a Freecom 1GB, the backup worked to it, but the recovery would fail at 100%.

Not shure about Linpus recovery since i havänt done one, but I've sucsessfully installed windows xp off both SanDisk Cruzer micro 4gb and Verbatim 1 gb stick.

Transcend Jetflash 4 gb didn't work. The recovery program started, but it got freezed in the second step (choosing the partition).

A 2gb Kingston pendrive worked without problems.

2Gb kingston data traveler worked for me but i had to put recovery disc in a vista pc when i put in my suse box it did the bb thing too.

Maybe that's why most of these 1GB sticks don't work... I made a recovery usb disc, booted into it and got to the BBB BBB BBB BBB BBB crap... mounted it in ubuntu, checked the files and hdc1._.tar.bz2 was 30mb short. Trying to see if I can fix it by copying a fresh hdc1._.tar.bz2 across my network onto the usb drive after removing some superfluous stuff off the usb drive (like that zip full of manual pdfs...)

well nuts, that didn't work either

SONY 4GB and 8GB don't work. I have used an external hard disk instead.
Why only some devices do work ? Is it a problem with boot speed or time out ?

Performed Linpus reinstall using EMTEC 8GB Flash Drive USB2.0 (EKMMD8GC250) no problem:)

:? My Sandisk Cruzer micro 4GB failed w/ a error code 39.

Edit: Oh, I feel silly. I didn't realize you said you hadn't done one.

Really weird, 8Gb Sandisk Cruzer works well, integral 2Gb do not work in the One, but boot perfectly in a regular intel laptop.
(FreeDOS on one stick, Mint on the other).
I would really like to know what determines success or failure on these USB sticks. Anyone asked acer?

On the subject of Sandisk Cruzers, PC W UK posted the wrong price ticket £13.99 for Sandisk Micro skin 8gb, I bought two.
The same price as 7dayshop, but without the postage, and the wait
