Hi all, I just came across a decent sized list of 1.8" hdd specifications, including critical data like which connector they use, thickness of the drive, and which iPods they fit into/come out of ;)
(sorry only found iPod info on Toshiba drives)

Handy if you wish to know whether your old iPod's hdd is useful to you, or whether that drive on eBay has the right connector or will fit inside your AAO's case.

Nice post, i can confirm that the HS122JC is just a standard cable, works as soon as you plug in the OEM ZIF/IDE cable that comes with the aao. just dont try closing the latch because the cable is on pretty tight.

    Hi,

I once put a Samsung Spinpoint N1 / 60 GB in an A110. It's 5 mm thick and fits in fine. But strangely a 1.8" is louder in action than a standard notebook HD (2.5"), that's very annoying if you had a silent SSD before. ZIF cables are rare to find and rather expensive. They stand only a couple of times connecting it before they don't work anymore. The latch on the HD side is very, very small and I had to reconnect it several times because it fell out when moving the netbook. Finally, the cable didn't work anymore.

And the end, I bought a AO531 that comes with a standard HD and replaced the 1.8" HD with the original SSD in the A110. Those tiny HDs are a species endangered by extinction and after using one for some time, I have to say, the sooner they disappear, the better.

    Thanks adeon :)

And viva I'm sure you're right, but us 110 owners don't have many options. I've just bought mine on eBay and had so many windows open I accidentally bid on the wrong one and ended up with the 8GB SSD version, which I have since discovered is widely reported as being very slow. 8GB?! That's tiny by today's standards. My mobile phone has 8GB built in!
So I will try one of the 30GB drives (hopefully from a friend's knackered iPod video) and will just have to put up with the noise.

I'm hoping an extra gig of memory, Windows 7 and a 4GB SD card for Readyboost, will make it usable. Might even try Leopard, but I don't suppose the performance would be very good, graphically speaking.

Oh well, more nerding and geekery which always makes me happy! lol

Just a quick query - on ebay there seem to be a lot of sellers advertising "THIS DRIVE WILL ONLY WORK IN iPOD DUE TO APPLE MODIFIED FIRMWARE" - is there any merit to this? I'm looking at a couple of hard drives to ditch the SSD in my AAO: one is a MK8022GAA 80gb model, and one a MK8010GAH 80gb model. I can see the GAH is listed in the table, but what about the GAA one?

    Hi,

I am trying to figure out if I can replace the 8GB SSD drive of my AAO 110L with a bigger drive and your listing is invaluable! Thanks a lot!

I have also read a lot of other posts in this forum, but yours is the most useful.

What I would like to ask is for a bried explanation about this 40 or 50 zif connection or the "flipped cables" . What are they referring to?

so i installed this into my acer aspire one aoa 110-1588 and the connectors fit up perfectly but for some reason it wont show up. do i need to possibly reset the bios? i went and deleted everything off the hard drive. i used the same cable that was used on the old 8gb ssd. the cable works fine cuz the 8gb ssd shows up but just has some read write problems. what do i need to do to get this drive working

Some drives need a flipped cable. Search for "ZIF FLIP" and use that. Someone also reportedly made his own by peeling off the blue tab, folding over the pins (now thisk enough to no longer need the blue tab) and then sanding through the other side to access those pins.

I got a flipped ZIF cable on eBay for my HTC426020G5CE00 20GB ZIF 40pin 5mm 2MB 4200RPM drive I installed today. They were a bit too short though so I had to mount it differently than tnkgrl's video showed (had to cut into my unused 3G module cavity). Ah well. I got a couple extras too if anyone wants 'em.

    Edit: This thread can help.

I have a MK3006Gal from an old Ipod lying useless around - What cable should I get - The connector on the HD doesn't fit the AAO.
Where did you find the list maybe there is more information there?
    Thanks in advance

I've recently decided to switch from my 8GB SSD to a Toshiba 30GB HD. I took the hard drive from my ipod video and ordered a new zif/lif cable, since i destroyed mine (couldn't get the connector to fit correctly). Just wanted to know since i haven't seen an answer on the forum, do I have to "unlock" the drive or can i just load a OS right after installing it.
    Thanks

I have to say, why would anyone with a 110-series want to bother with a 1.8" hard drive that is noisy, mechanical, less power efficient and doesn't fit in the computer properly, when you can get one of these instead:

    http://www.amazon.com/Super-Talent-1-3- ... 934&sr=8-1

Its a purpose built drop-in replacement for the 110-series and it flies.

El Matarife is 100% correct. I picked up one last week; installed that, new RAM, and a 9 cell eBayterry...this is an insanely different machine. Definitely a recommended drive. Running Win7 Ultimate now, renewed my interest in this machine!

I was planning to get the super talent ssd for my aspire one but i couldn't justify the cost. The 30gb hard drive was from an ipod i had received as a gift so it was cheaper to just get a new zif cable and use the ipod hd. I just received my cable and everything works perfectly, installed windows 7 and so far no issues. Just got a 9 cell battery as well, so battery life won't be an problem, although right now i'm having an issue with the battery (battery light blinks orange when it's in and i can't get a estimated life on the battery through windows or using battery pro, i'm planning to discharge is fully and see if that will help -will post in another thread).

yeah that is the same speed as a realy good cf card btw (x544?)
    is there a 64gb vertion?

i am planing on using a zif to cf card adaptor.

does anyone know how to tell when you need a flip cable?

i noteced on some devises a few of the pins near ish one side are shorted together. can you use this as a sort of gide as in pin 1 this end (or vice versa) i know not all hardrived will have that but if you can see enuf of the bord you can probably tell

also i have head that a hdd can be damaged by using the wrong cable. can my mobo be at risk if i use the wrong one?

    Hi

I have tried connecting the following drives to me ACER ASPIRE ONE. But when I power up and check the Bios it shows none as the Hard drive information. I have tried the same cable that i removed from 8gb SD HD tested with the hard drives below and no success. I then purchased the items from the ebay links below and confirm that both Hard drive work when connected via the USB adapter and Zif cables connected to a laptop. But when I connect back to the Acer and power up hard drive showing as none in Bios. Any ideas please as i am pulling my hair out. Thanks in advance.

I have a Toshiba MK3008GAL 30GB drive (bought new from eBay) which I'm thinking of installing into my Aspire One. Can anyone tell me:

Does a new drive have to be partitioned and/or formatted before going in?

Does this model require a flip cable?

I tried this once before with a secondhand drive and ran into an immediate problem: the cable I had was fractionally too wide to fit into the drive's connector - not too thick, as some have found, but definitely too wide. The Acer's SSD cable also wouldn't fit. In the end I shaved a tiny sliver (of plastic, not the metal conductor strip) from one side of the cable to get it to fit, but the drive wasn't recognised. Is that likely to happen again?

    Many thanks.
