basically Ive been wanting to buy an aspire for quite some time now. I found one of the new ones with a 1GB ram and a 160 HDD. I basically would do the best thing and go with this, but there's just one problem. See even if there is 1GB of memory, i would like to be able to upgrade it in the future. Since i don't have an acer aspire, i cant be sure that acer used the extra slot memory slot on the aspire one to get it to 1GB. Which means, ill need to buy a gig of ram with the laptop before i order it; so that's why I'm asking in advance before i do.

The AAO 1Gb has 1 512mb stick soldered and 1 512mb on the slot. You can upgrade to 1.5gb max by swapping out the 512mb for a 1gb DDR2 SODIMM. You cannot add a 2Gb module, since the max memory allowed is only 2gb, and the 512 is already permanently soldered... we are all stuck to 1.5gb max.

Question... what happens with a 512 stick and a 2 GB stick. I know it will only access 2 GB, but in a MacBook you can put two 2 GB sticks even though the chipset will only recognize 3 GB. Or could you put a 2GB stick in there and limit the RAM accessed at bootup with a command: maxmem=2048

I'm cracking it open to switch out the WiFi card (need wireless in OS X) so the RAM is not a big deal, but I'd sure like to get it to 2GB.

It's not going to boot. AA1 chipset is running max 1.5GB and TBH there is couple of threads related to this question already on this forum. Clue - it's not OS related...

    F.e. here:
