If you're trying to use it for MSN, you certainly need the latest updates installed; MS change the login process from time to time to lock out non-MS applications. If you've not run the Live Updates (under the Settings section of the desktop), try again after doing so.

Be aware, too, that at the moment many people are unable to get logged in to MSN even using MS software: their authentication server seems to be playing up. I don't use it much myself but my son and his friends are moaning about it!

    Hi,

I too am having problems with the instant messenger. At home where I have a dsl connection it won't connect, but at my job where we have a cable connection it works very well. Same thing with add/remove programs. Whenever I try to do that at home I get a message that I seem not to have an internet connection but with the cable connection works very wel. It seems to me that it's a problem with a port that needs to be opened up. The question is: which port and how to do this. I have a D-link G 604 T adsl modem/router. I tried turning off the firewall althogether but then I was unable toe make a connection at all. Anyone know which port I need to open up or does the problem ly with my ISP.
I also experimented a bit with Ubuntu a whlie ago and I seem to remember that I had to turn something off in Ubuntu in order to get a working connection but I can't seem to remember just what. (had to change a 6 into a 4 or something).
Looking forward to a solution because it will help me a lot in starting to learn about this Linpus.

Add/remove programs shouldn't need any ports specially opened; it's downloading (by http or ftp) and there is no need for anything on the internet to be establishing an incoming connection. Try running it from a console ('sudo pirut') and see what precise error messages are generated. The GUI errors are often not very informative (one recent 'no connection' error in the Live Update turned out to be a problem with a partly-downloaded file).

The 'change a 6 into a 4' thing was probably IPv6, but I don't think that's enabled on the One anyway.

Indeed, IPv6 is not an issue here. Strangely, as we have two ones, one connects well to Pirut, but the other doesn't. When I type sudo pirut I get: [root@localhost user]# sudo pirut
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirror ... &arch=i386 error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (113, 'No route to host'
Instant messenger will only connect through the cable connection though. I installed skype yesterday and that works fine.

Ok: on the one which *does* connect, what messages do you get in the console if you launch sudo pirut from there?

Two possibilities here: one is that the two machines have different repository details (have you perhaps done this: http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/09/updated-repositories.html on one and not the other?). If so, the one whcih is working should generate a whole list of messages telling you it's downloading stuff from a repository address - check whether that is the same address as the one you can't contact on the 'non-co-operating' machine.

The other possibility is that the fedora repository server is flaky: that same page contains a comment dated today indicating that someone else can't get to that repo. If this is the case, it's possible neither will connect at the moment!

Got so annoyed with Linpus that I changed to Ubuntu 8.10. After sorting out wireless problems this now seems to work perfectly. We have one Linpus machine now and one Ubuntu, we'll see what works better and then change both of them to the same OS.

I did some updates on the AAO and now lets me connect on msn. On the add account window
a new box appeared, it says "use a windows messenger compatible service".I ticked the box and now msn works.I just updated until that box appeared. W hen i first bought the AAO that box wasnt there.

    Cheers,

Interesting. Windows messenger is a special, limited msn client that was shipped with XP. Your problems are therefor either with the login to normal msn, or with the extra features normal msn supports, but windows messenger does not (like e.g. the use of the webcam).

Did anyone check the ports ?
