    Hi,

I've found an easy way to download applications (including VLC, GIMP,Skype & Firefox 3) and more games directly to an Acer Aspire One. It even puts the ICON on the Acer desktop for you! Go to the following Acer website and follow the simple instructions:

    http://www.acer.com/aspireone/support/files/files.html

    Good luck.

    :)

Clearly, I'm not as clever as you! I thought the idea of the forum was to help people, especially novices like myself, rather than post unhelpful comments. It is apparent that there are people on the forum who, like myself, have problems installing these programs and I just thought it might save them some time and a lot of frustration.

    Thanks for the post!

Didn't know about this site until now. Will take a look and see if there is some program that I'm still missing.

    Cheers!

    Hi suecoo66,

Thanks for your comments. If you go to the following website and go to Tweak No 6, it tells you how to Add Desktop Icons - the example given is for Skype! Hope this helps. I found it really useful.

The version of VLC you get from here has none of the useful codecs with it IIRC. So you still need to faff about a bit to get it working properly.

    Hi Everyone
    Another newbie I am afraid.
I have been to the website, downloaded VLC and extracted it etc. I tells me that it does not recognise the format? Am I being stupid? What am I doing wrong? Please help.
    Thanks

    Hi All,

I am a complete novice with Linux, so would appreciate some help. My first issue is downloading Skype. I have visited the acer website suggested in an earlier post, and followed the instructions. I downloaded Skype and the Xarchiver asked me if I wanted to extract the file. I clicked on the skype.sh file and....nothing.

I expect it has extracted the file, but to where? How do I find it? The instructions at the Acer site tell me I simply need to find the Skype.sh folder, but how?

    Thanks,

    M_R

Has anyone any ideas about the difficulty in extracting the zip file? I can't do it. I get an error message "An error occurred while accessing the archive"

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Although I haven't resolved this problem on the Acer, I have got round it.

I downloaded onto my PC, unzip it there and transferred the unzipped file to the Acer by USB pen drive.

Shouldn't be necessary really but it works.

    Hi ,
Im new to linux and need some help with installing vlc.
i followed the advice on this thread [10 tweaks ] but ive gotten stuck and nothing seems to work.
i followed all the commands with regard to - nano , livna and it was successfully installed...
but i got stuck at this point:
    sudo yum install vlc
    Setting up Install Process
    Parsing package install arguments
    No package vlc available.
    No package release available.
    Nothing to do

    can anyone help me out?

also i installed azureus via the package manager and after downloading a movie , it is stored in a .rar form and i tried to open it but xarchiver says that archive format is not supported and the proper thing is not installed !

coming to think of it i dont think i have been able to extract anything thus far....

    please help!! :((
