    Guide moved here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne

I think the Ubuntu wiki is the better place for it, since anyone can fix what needs to be fixed.

Please do have a read through and fix any mistakes.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Well, after moving the alsa-driver folder to the right path, ubuntu now recognizes the front mic and the external mic. Front Mic works in test call of skype and on the sound recorder. Headphones detection works too, use a good pair of headphones, my Sony headphones works.

    Sorry, the path is /lib/modules/2.6.xxx/ubuntu/sound/alsa-driver

The alsa driver installs in /lib/modules/2.6.xxx/kernel/sound/alsa-driver, so you have to move it to the above path to make ubuntu run the right driver, or it will load 1.0.16 instead of the right 1.0.17.

Maybe the advice for improving the SSD performance from http://blogs.zdnet.com/perlow/?p=9190 could be included in the guide? (Excluding Tweak #1 which is not relevant).

I have a distinct feeling that the system operates faster with these tweaks.

Yep, particularly the ´noatime´... It really improves write speed.

    cheers

An additional install help for reducing SSD wear would be to not configure swap during installation. This should be recommended as a safe option for those with 1GB or more RAM.

As for sound; our culprit is alsa-driver/alsa-kernel/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c as far as I have understood it. Should be possible to tweak it...

I also get a distinct crackling noise when following the instructions, and i would very much appreciate any suggestions. In addition, I believe there is an error in the instructions. The lines in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base shuld start with "options" and not just "option".

Could you make a shot guide on how to do this. Im not fluent in linux, and when I tried this I could not compile it.one the make command it ended with some errors. I tried to track down what this meant, and I thought it might be that I used the wrong linuxheaders. So i downloaded the 2.6.24-20 headers and tried to use that in my configure. but i still got the errors, so I gave up. I used the same method as for installing the madwifi drivers.

http://array.org/ubuntu/ This site has an Ubuntu kernel optimized for the eeePC, with it Ubuntu can boot in 20-23 seconds. It would be great to have something similar for the One. Way back I've used Gentoo and compiled my own kernel using a text based tool. Would compiling your own kernel for Ubuntu be this easy?

    [update]
    I've found this how-to: http://beginlinux.com/index.php/desktop ... ub_compile
I think it's pretty straightforward and promises a big performance improvement. Maybe we can borrow the .config from array.org as a start point?

    [update2]
Is it possible to use Intel's C/C++ compiler to get an extra performance boost from the optimized kernel?

    Hello.
I have a problem with the installation of Ubuntu. On Aspire One I was installed Windows XP SP2. I had to format SSD. I made this with "Windows XP instalation disk". Before that I was downloaded Ubuntu 8.04.1 from www.ubuntu.com. I signed Ubuntu. Iso on CD (I have an external DVD writer). After formatting partition set Ubunto. Iso in DVD drive, perform step to say Aspire One of where to boot but than it wrote a massage: "This is not a bootable CD. Please insert boot CD ...". Please help me to install Ubunto on Aspire One.

    Best regards,
    Metodi
