I was playing a downloaded rented movie and the volume was at the highest mark, but it was still very hard for me to hear. I tried with and without earphones and it was just too low for me to make out the words. Is there anyway to boost the volume?

try using vlc for your media player or winamp. Both programs allow you to amplify the volume level - VLC will go to 300% of normal volume. Use the Tools, preferences.audio menu setting in VLC.

Use the Equalizer function in winamp to boost the audio level. Some audio codecs provide a volume preference as well. Google is your friend

Thanks, but I am a novice. What is the VLC, and how do I get to it?

    A Google search produces this.

You could open a terminal and run:

    alsamixer

Making sure that the PCM volume is turned up.

    Cheers.

I'm not being funny here, but the speakers on the One are in the base.
So, if you put it on something absorbant (like a bed), it can get muffled.
I find if I tip it so that it's laying on its lid, it gets quit a bit louder :)
(though that's not always the most convenient configuration, I agree :)

i use alsamixer frequently; in fact, after each shutdown and subsequent powerup.
on every boot, the system sets PCM to 60% and Master to 100%.

how can one set the default to, say, PCM 100% / Master 50% ???
