    hi there!

if you're using xp, try this...

    1) click start > connect to > Show all connections

    2) Right click on Local Area Connection and see if Disable is one of the options. if it is, double click the Local area connection, if not, click Enable.

    3) mark the check box of "Show icon in notification area when connected"

    4)click apply.

    5) see if it works...

Hi, you need hit alt-f2 and enter "xfce4-panel -a", (no quotes when you enter it) which will give you an "add items to the panel" menu. Hopefully your network icon will be in the list waiting for you to put it back, by dragging and dropping. It doesn't always appear to have worked when you drag, but be patient and hit close before you drag several icons in (which is what I did first time!)

    Hope that does the trick.

Open a terminal .... u can do it with ALT-F2 and type in "terminal" without quotes and click run.

    Then in terminal paste ...

    ps ax|grep NetworkManager

Some stuff will show below that commandline. Copy and paste it here.

    Cheers.

Duh! I guess you can't copy and paste if you don't have an internet connection. But obviously you're accessing this forum from another computer. Just give me some idea as to what is displayed below that commandline.

    Cheers.

Ah, sorry, I should have checked - the network manager icon is part of the system tray, and that command can only add/remove the system tray, not affect it's contents. Hopefully rbil is going to get to the bottom of your problem for you.

OK, in a terminal run these 2 commands:

    sudo gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /system/networking

    gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /system/networking

Then restart your computer and see whether networking returns to your panel.

If that doesn't work, let me know, and we can try something else.

    Cheers.

    Hello again
typed inthe first command and got

Error while parsing options: Unkown option --recursive-unset/system/networking.
Run 'gconftool-2 --help' to see a full list of available command line options.

should I do that - didn't enter the 2nd command line you suggested either as yet?

Really appreciate your help, I'm really in the dark!

    best

Looks like you're missing a space between "unset" and "/system"

    Cheers.

Thank you for your time. :) I could have given you the fix earlier, but I was hoping to discover why this problem occurs in the first place. You seemed to be a good way to try and ascertain that, since you were having the problem. Unfortunately, I still don't know why this happens for some people? Obviously something isn't written properly to ~/.gconf/system/networking causing this to happen.

    Cheers.

    rbill,

this happened to me many times. I repeatedly lost the icon when I manually run NM_option0025.sh through the terminal
    $ sh NM_option0025.sh

I can always get it back by running
    $ sh NetworkManager080819.sh

I don't know what the two updates do, but logically NetworkManager080819 should precede NM_options0025 as the update date is earlier.

After reading your post, I tried again to run the above update, and again it was lost, and the two lines of commands from you did not bring the icon back. The NetworkManager080819 brought it back.
    Just wondering what's wrong ...
