    Hi all,

i've recently gotten a new Acer Aspire One laptop with Linpus. I'm trying to make work a usb 3g modem without fortune.

I plug into usb and try wvdial. This is shows:

    [user@localhost ~]$ wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: Device or resource busy
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: Device or resource busy
--> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: Device or resource busy

If I go to Configuration->Network and I try to create a new connection, the only possibilities I have are: WLAN, LAN and pppoE but nothing of UMTS/3G.

    Does anyone try it?

    Thanks in advanced.

    ***********************
    EDIT
    ***********************

OK, I get it! It was only to configure wvdial.conf

Personally I think it's a good idea to use vodafone's own mobile connectivity suite, although it's quite resource-heavy program. I tried it with Linpus and Ubuntu, worked like a charm.

Installation instructions follow (an indirect ripoff of the original instructions)
    https://forge.betavine.net/frs/?group_id=12&release_id=26

    Code:
    wget [url]https://forge.betavine.net/frs/download.php/269/vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-2.0.beta3-ALL-i386-installer.run[/url]
    sudo sh vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-2.0.beta3-ALL-i386-installer.run

reboot for the module to be inserted (the easy way)
    Code:
    sudo vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux

And it works just as like in windows.

    Hi Renato,

Have you got the Huawei modem working in AA1...? Appreciate if you could show us how you do it.

Even the question wasn't directed at me, refer to my earlier post. It's the same as Acer's official Huawei guide (released today). :)

    Hi,
The problem is partial solved. The modem work and I could surf the internet with it.
    I have yet two problems:
    1. The program icon in the connect tab give an error message and don’t work.

'Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver for Linux needs the following files and dirs with some specific permissions in order to work properly: /opt/vmc/etc/ppp/peers should be readable and writtable by group vmc user user should be a member of group vmc'

    2. From the terminal window after enter the command

    Code:
    sudo vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux
    I got an error message:

    audit_log_user_command(): Connection refused
GConf Error: Failed to launch configuration server: Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2" (No such file or directory)

But the program work and I could make the connection. ;)

This is not the final solution but is a big step.

Where I could find that Acer's official Huawei guide?

    Thank you

I follow this but when I try sudo vodafone-mob... :

"Su dispositivo "Huawei E870" no está registrado correctamente con el kernel. Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver for Linux necesita al menos dos puertos serie para comunicarse con su Huawei E870. El programa incluye unas reglas de udev más algunos binarios para asegurar que su dispositivo siempre es reconocido correctamente. Si ha instalado desde el funete, asegurese que ha copiado los ficheros necesarios del directorio contrib"

BTW my modem is Huawei E220. ¿any idea?

    Thanks

To use the Huaweii E220 , and some other 3G modems and PCMCIA cards download and install Vodafone Mobile Connect Driver for Linux , is very similar (best in my opinion) to the Windows APP that comes from Vodafone. Works great without using any command or script in the console, all graphic interface :)

    Download the "vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux-XXX-ALL-i386-installer.run" file

    Hi!

Does it need to be a vodafone SIM inserted on the modem, or can it be from another company?

    Thanks a lot,

I think that you can use any SIM but im not sure, i know that the APP gets all the connection data form the SIM and you have not to configure nothing. I read that there are some programs in Linux to use all SIMS with the opetaror-locked 3G modems but im not sure if this APP is one of them You should try and post the results here :)

Your modem is not registered with the kernel. Reboot your computer, I had my test-modem plugged in all the time, it should work.

Don't mind about the peer -directory permissions. you are supposed to run the program as root user, as for the other error-messages, they just sound typical gnome & linux. :D

wow, the vodafone software 2.0.x works for me!
everything else didnt (vodafone 1.9.x, or the .c file from that east european guy + pppd/wvdial).

however I had to tweak the provider file which resides in your .vmc2/... directory in a text editor as the dial-in number is different, and you cant configure that via the gui.

if you get a message that twistd is needed, just install it: "sudo yum install twisted"

i made a clean install and then installed the vodafone software. that worked like a charm.

then i used the workaround to install the liveupdate and after rebooting the vodafon software did not recognize my modem (huawei e220) anymore.

any ideas how to solve that?
