I was advised to partition my harddrive to make my laptop faster but I have no idea how that is done. Can anyone tell me how?

You could use this program AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard
    it's free!!

link to the program can be found here:

    http://www.disk-partition.com/

NOTE: that partitioning will not speed up your machine, having said that
if you have a very large hard drive it may help a very very little.

I'll explain files are placed on a hard drive from the middle outwards "think of the
hard drive as a CD/LP" with tracks on it,but the tracks are magnetic ones.

So if your system files have been "installed first" in the middle the arm that reads
the programs will have only a small amount of movement to read the files one after another.

I think I understand that part. So there is no point in trying to partition my hard-drive anyway because it's not very large. Are there any other ways you know that can help?

Clair 02 using your own words you have said your a little tech-challenged,
it's a little harder to advise you.

We on the forum don't wish to advise you, and give advice that could
possibility harm your machine, having said that there are things you can try
    as a novice.

Running a program called CCLEANER will help, and a program called MALWAREBYTES ANTI-MALWARE.

Right clicking on the bottom task bar you will see TASK MANAGER open it you may have to further click on the MORE DETAILS bottom left to expend it.

Look at the START UP section and disable some programs the start up, “DON'T DISABLE ANY ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS”!!

Next thing type DISK CLEANUP in the windows search section this is
at the bottom of the screen windows 10, top right side windows 8,8.1 or
by pressing the start button windows 7.

This process will help you to safely remove a lot of rubbish files hiding on your machine.
You will have to allow the disk cleanup process.

Thanks for the advice and thank you for explaining it in detail. I will certainly do that. Do I need to do it often or is it just a once off thing? And how do I know which programs I need and which I don't? A lot of them have names that I don't even recognize.

Once a week cleaning should be fine. The free ones are fine!

MALWAREBYTES ANTI-MALWARE can be found here:

    CCLEANER can be found here:

From what I know, partitioning a hard drive is useful in the olden days when the OS was Windows 98 because the accessing is sequential. But later OS versions have improved so partitioning a hard disk would not affect the speed of processing. It is similar to defragmentation. If you will notice, the defragging of a hard drive is not being used anymore because the capacity is large enough. So I guess you just forget the partitioning of your hard drive.

Thanks for the advice, Corzhens. I am so glad I don't have to partition my hard drive, mostly because I was dreading it. I really don't like having to do anything to my laptop that might result in me messing it up for good so I try to avoid doing all these seriously 'techy' things. I've been trying to find ways of making my laptop faster, and so far all the suggestions that I got here have been very helpful. Thanks again.
