I count 43 from upstairs. Every year, the number seems to triple.

    Holy crap buddy o_O

On mine, I get about 6 - 10, depends where I am in my house.

D-Link is my own personal network that I use when the 802.11b Connection goes off at 11pm.

That is a huge amount of access points!

Where I live I get none whatsoever except for our own home network. Obviously that means that if we have trouble, I'm stumped until we sort it out. :|

'kinell, and look how many are being used straight out of the box, I bet all the linksys ones still have the default password set as well. You could have a ball if you were that way inclined. Log in, change the user password to something obscure, MAC filter everything but your machine, then a couple of days later pick the router out of the bucket because they've gone and bought a new one.

There's a valuable security lesson there for anyone using a wireless router, change your SSID, and change
the user password as soon as you get it, and set up the wireless security properly.

There's just the one access point here, my own, but I've got one of these

pointing at the bar a hundred yards down the road. :D :D

Yes, about one out of every 10 is default configuration, default password. No joke.

Many have amusing names and there are some advertised as public wireless. I drove down the street and back for 15 minutes and picked up 1901 access points:

My wireless network is called "Excalibur" (since our family name is Arthur; you get the picture). My friend's network is called "Ragamuffin" after her favourite pet guinea pig!

Currently 4 including mine (not shown here), one of which is unprotected. Mine is called "sextiosjuan" which is swedish for <the number> sixtyseven, which is my apt. number :p I have seen up to about 7-8 max but still only one unprotected. I live in an 8-storey apartment building with 70 apartments, with another 8-storey building almost wall-to-wall, I was surprised that there aren't more networks visible.

There are only two besides mine that I can see. Both have the original config and one is open. I would not dare mess with them because I know who they belong to and they would come to me for help if they had problems. ;)

16, without searching or waiting around for more to come online. about 4 are open.

There are fun things like black alchemy fake AP

    http://www.blackalchemy.to/project/fakeap/

" If one access point is good, 53,000 must be better.

Black Alchemy's Fake AP generates thousands of counterfeit 802.11b access points. Hide in plain sight amongst Fake AP's cacophony of beacon frames. As part of a honeypot or as an instrument of your site security plan, Fake AP confuses Wardrivers, NetStumblers, Script Kiddies, and other undesirables. "

    and - http://www.wirelessve.org/entries/show/WVE-2005-0056

"FakeAP is a Perl script for Linux that utilizes cards compatible with the HostAP driver to create the illusion of many APs operating in the vicinity. It accomplishes this by putting a wireless card into Master mode which causes the card to function as an AP. FakeAP then cycles the card through varous MAC addresses and SSIDs. This will cause any 802.11 discovery tools being operated in the area to show many APs operating in the area.

By default FakeAP will randomly generate AP MAC addreses with the 00:00:0C, 00:00:CE, and 00:00:EF vendor prefixes along with the SSIDs "Access Point", "tsunami", "host", "airport", and "linksys". However, a list of vendor OUIs and words to use for SSIDs can be used.

In addition, FakeAP allows one to adjust the probably of it creating WEP encrypted networks. In order to evade detection through trilateration it also allows the output power of the card's radio to be varied within a user-supplied range.

I' ve thought of setting one of those up on one of the new $100 marvell wall wart computers -

as this is one of the heaviest net stumbled areas of this major city.. I would love to just poison the well. :ugeek:

Wow, that is hilarious. I live in a small town (Oconto, WI) and next to a city park. There is one house to the south and they are 89 years old, and the City Park is south of them. To the north is an empty house and an empty cabin, then an older couple with no computer and finally Ducky who is 79. I have woods to the west of me (Duckies woods) and the Bay of Green Bay to the East. So needless to say, the only AP I have is mine and it is unsecured lol.

BTW, we cannot even get cable TV out here ;) And of you do a Google search on 5206 County Road N Oconto it shows my house in the wrong spot. I am south of Frog Pond Road and it shows me being north.
