Hi,my dell Inspiron n5010 keeps on going in startup repair loop. Upon running dell diagnostic found
Hard drive error code 0142 , status 70..
Please note I can still see files in my hard drive using command prompt.

I do understand though the error code means hdd is faulty but Is THERE ANY way I can copy all that data in DVD or any other way around this issue..
Any help appreciated, as I have sovmany important files and photos which I don't want to lose .

Welcome to the laptop forums site

As you are aware the first thing is to replace the hard dive.

Here's a link to a free service manual to help you.

    https://www.parts-people.com/blog/category/dell-inspiron-15r-m501r-n5010-m5010-repair-manual/

You will need a 2.5” hard drive to usb eternal cable.

Again this is an example of the cable you will need

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-5-Exter...057590&hash=item1a32d02d17:g:KVMAAOSwkepZjpRy

If your files are recoverable when you have your system up and running with your new hard drive the cable will help you .

If you have a stored operating system serial number then You can download the iso software
    using this program.

Hi iam back, ok have managed to take the corrupt harddrive out and recover data using the cable.
    I have few questions,
Could I take any 2.5 sata hdd , format and install into my laptop( as my friend has a broken laptop but HDD seems to be functional).
How do I go on about Installing OS , as I have the win7 home premium key , but no installation dvd was ever provided by dell , as laptop came with built in recovery.
Would that key be locked to dell factory reset / built in recovery ( in my original corrupt drive) only.

Most laptops are 2.5 sata hdd so you should be able to use it.

The link supplied will allow you to obtain a iso image of your windows system
you will have to either burn the iso image to dvd or a flash drive.

Given you have a dell you can probably obtain a windows (dvd only) from ebay very cheaply.

It's a tricky one to answer,I would take the chance of the OEM VERSION.

    Hi all,
All sorted , windows installed activated on new HDD, and all the other softwares.
Found this really helpful site dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com
Explaining in detail how to activate windows using SLP key, on dell computers.
