Help for a university student to buy a laptop/PC?

Greetings,
I'm going to university in about 5 months, and I'm looking forward to buy a computer for both my work and some slightly invested gaming, like certain games on Steam. I can't really afford anything too expensive, I just want something that would let me run some games smoothly.
What do you guys suggest?
