Well, I was bored, so decided to check the specs on the 120 (and 160 GB) Drive. It's pretty dry reading, but a few things seem useful to know.
If you have the 120 GB drive, it's a HITACHI model HTS543212L9A300 My buddy Google sent me here:
http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/products/Travelstar_5K320 Yes kids, we have a 'Travelstar 5K320' Woohoo!

Here's what I found on the datasheet sheet you may want to know:

Average Random Seek Time - Read (ms) 12
Average Random Seek Time - Write (ms) 13
    Rotational Speed (RPM) 5400
    Power-on-to-ready (sec) 3.5
    Command overhead (ms) 1.0
Disk-buffer data transfer (Mb/s) (max) 775 <----- take this with a grain of salt.
    Buffer-host data transfer (Gbit/s) (max) 1.5 / 3.0 <---- take THIS with a KILO of salt!
    My 100 metre sprint time (s) (max) 9.42 <---- I did say 'max' didn't I :)

    Drive ready time
    Condition Typical (sec) Max. (sec)
Power On To Ready 3.5 9.5

    Temperature and humidity
    Operating conditions

Temperature 5 to 55°C (See note below)
Relative humidity 8 to 90% noncondensing
Maximum wet bulb temperature 29.4°C noncondensing
    Maximum temperature gradient 20°C/hour
Altitude –300 to 3048 m (10,000 ft) <----- Why in feet? metres used above?
    Nonoperating conditions
    Temperature –40 to 65°C
Relative humidity 5 to 95% noncondensing
Maximum wet bulb temperature 40°C noncondensing
    Maximum temperature gradient 20°C/hour
    Altitude –300 to 12,192 m (40,000 ft)

    Service Life:
Service life of the drive is approximately 5 years or 20,000 power on hours, whichever comes first, under
    the following assumptions:
Less than 333 power on hours per month.
Seeking/Writing/Reading operation is less than 20% of power on hours.
This does not represent any warranty or warranty period. Applicable warranty and warranty period are
    covered by the purchase agreement.

There's more, MUCH more. Read it if you can't sleep and have misplaced the rubber hammer you usually use to knock yourself out...!
    HTH!

what i didn't like was the 700mA power draw. In comparison, Seagate 320GB 5400.5 is spec'ed at 450mA. I noticed LCD flickering on lowest brightness setting when using the Hitachi and running on battery. No such issues noted with the Seagate.

It is a fast drive, the Hitachi, they just need to get the power draw under control better, imo.

could someone make it simple and tell me how much of a difference this 120gig drive will be when placed beside the faster 8gig SSD in the £199 PCworld model?
It's a deciding factor on what i'll get today, if either, as i'm thinking of waiting a bit... but their offer ends today!
    thanks

    *edit

also, how does that power drain translate to battery time compared to the 8gig SSD?

I purchased the One with the 120G HD. When I go to Computer and right click on the drive icon- I says that the drive capacity is only 105GB. What up?

    Thanks

    Also, the drive's unformated size is 111.8 GiB (120,000,000,000 B / 1024^3).

    say "please"

No problems, heat might be an issue, and it depends on what model you are looking at specifically.

it may run a bit hot, no compatibility issues. I would say go with a 320gb 5400rpm drive, they have very good speed comparison wise (not seek time wise though).

i have the 7200rpm laying around that's why i was considering it. will "a bit hot" cause any problems since the acer being so small

There are currently four different drives used, i've made an on paper comparison of all drives here, plus upgrading options.

I have the Acer One with a 120 GB hard drive and wanted to swap it out with a 320 GB 7200 speed. I have one of these in my Dell XPS 1720 laptop. Does anybody have instructions or video links to install the drive? I wanted to take the 120 GB drive out and ghost it with norton ghost to a 320 gb drive...

    thanks,

    Dave

Pretty much same as installing RAM. The HDD SATA connector is on the bottom of the board, just to the right of the RAM slot. 2 screws to remove the HDD from the board. 4 screws to get the HDD out of the retaining bracket.

You can GHOST it through USB if you can get a USB enclosure, then do the physical swap after if you like, or vice versa (swap first, then ghost with new drive installed).

I noticed my display flickering as well on low when doing a large file trasnsfer over wifi tonight. My One has a WDC WD1200BEVS-22UST0 120GB drive in it.

If i upgrade my drive though I'm going to wait for the 2.5" SSD's to come down in price a bit more. I don't need capacity that much I just purchased this model because I wanted the flexibility and the pre-loaded XP. I think I must be getting lazy in my old age...

Interesting, my A150L bought in germany has a Seagate drive in it.

    the ST9120817AS

My A150L bought in Indonesia has the same drive with you. Btw, I have a question. What's the difference between USB to IDE Combo cable and USB to IDE SATA cable? Which one (if any) can be used to transfer data to and fro this type of HD? Thanx in advance
