Most of the time my laptop seems to run fine but every now and then it will suddenly just switch off as though it's lost power. However, if I switch it back on again it loads back up. Whilst it's on it does sometimes make a whirring noise. Does this sound like the hard drive is damaged?

Sounds more like the fan, a laptop will shut down if it gets to hot.

Check the vents for fluff build up.

A vehicle garage air line can be used to clear out the fluff, the garage will have an air gun that the mechanics use.

Or you can purchase an air can online.
