Grub Splash Screen - Advice Please

Hi
I tried changing the grub splashscreen using startup-manager in Ubuntu.

But all I get is a corrupt image with the text over the top. Then the Ubuntu log appears off centre and grey scale !!

What s the best resolution for the image, and what resolution and colour depth do I need to set in startup-manager ??

The images I'm trying with are:

Any other advise ?

You might be better posting in the specific Ubuntu forum on this site, or in the general Ubuntu support forums; I get the impression the 'Linux' areas here are mainly read by Linpus users.
