Fukushima, Japan (CNN)Soichi Saito was in hospital when the earthquake hit.

The 65-year old had just undergone surgery for prostate cancer and was recuperating when the walls of his 6th floor room began to shake. Medical equipment came crashing to the floor.

For almost six minutes on March 11, 2011, the 9.0 magnitude earthquake — the worst to ever hit Japan — rocked the country.

The quake was so strong that it permanently moved Japan's main island, Honshu, more than two meters to the east. The impact also raised huge waves up to 40 meters high that, as people were still reeling from the aftershocks, began crashing into the country.

More than 20,000 people died or went missing in the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, while hundreds of thousands more lost their homes.

If you have no idea, today marks the 5th anniversary of the Fukushima disaster.

Wow..that was five years ago already today? It was devastated back then and to think about the numbers of people who died in that disaster.

Yeah, yesterday it was 5 years exactly. The worst part is that the radiation is still leaking out, and has affected not only the Japanese but also the US. A terrible tragedy indeed.

When I saw the news I started to tear up for it was so huge and devastating just like the India tsunami news so quick so damaging! Already 5 years has passed. God help us all and protect us. I hope many areas get lots of help for their people and solutions too for disaster help!

This is one of those events that people will be talking about in another 5 years to show you how NOT to handle these situations. It was so horribly, poorly managed and we might be paying for it for decades. Nuclear power is no joke and the stuff that's in there could basically be "burning" forever, an infinite fire that we don't know how to put out...

Decades? Centuries or more.... the impact of this will and already has on our environment is huge, but they don't want to tell us. They have poisoned our oceans... This was much worse than Chernobyl, because all that waste was thrown into the sea.

@Krissttina Isobe Yeah, sadly the Japanese government is not being very honest with its own people, neither are the rest of the world government being honest to their citizens about this whole issue. Specially the US... because it was also irradiated. And that radioactive waste is still affecting our seas. This is a real tragedy, but they are downplaying it so badly.
