The Acer Recovery Management cd (as burned to usb stick) requires mouse operation (mine is frozen centre screen). It will not respond to any combination of keyboard input. The reason I need the recovery is .. yes .. the frozen mouse (touchpad). Any ideas welcome .. (the recovery usb has operated well up to this date)

Check first that you haven't accidentally switched the mousebad off by pressing 'alt' and 'F7' together. The recovery program doesn't respond to 'tapping' the mousepad to select options, only to pressing the left button. I don't know whether an external USB mouse will work in your situation, but it's worth a try.

Thanks to Keith / karona .. indeed accident was to blame. Fn+F7 toggles the touchpad on/off. I am now in humble mode!
