external ntfs drive not reconized anymore

I know, how stupid can you be but yesterday I unplugged my external drive by first shutting down the pc (acer aspire one with Linux light) and than yanking out the usb cable (It was late, tired etc etc). So now my acer will not recognize the external ntfs disk at all. it doesn't even show up in Thunar file manager. yesterday I could read and write. now I'm just looking at an empty spot just beneath my home dir where my disk used to be. I'm not at all in to Linux so HELP!!! :(
